The Magnificent Seven's 'Shawu bull', a massive South African elephant bull, long since past, was the inspiration for the commanding Camp Shawu.
Sporting no-nonsense decor and an authentic buffalo dung construction, the camp (a satellite entity to the Kruger National Park's Shishangeni Lodge) takes up a 15 000 hectare private concession under the Kruger National Park. Embracing the elements of fine safari accommodation, from its well appointed rooms to its relaxing decks overlooking the concession. Camp Shawu is a rewarding and magical experience, right in the midst of a wild African setting.
Accommodation at Camp Shawu comprises of five luxury twin rooms, completed in an authentic African motif, and providing en-suite bathroom facilities, outdoor showers, ceiling fans, fire places, and private patios.
Guests to Camp Shawu can indulge in exciting morning and evening game drives, in open Land Rovers, out into the rough and untamed bush of the Limpopo Province bushveld. These drives are conducted and guided by a team of informative and experienced guides, all of whom are eager to answer questions and make the experience as complete and authentic as possible. The lodge also allows for self driven excursions into the park. For a more relaxed experience, visits are arranged out bird watching.
Facilities at Camp Shawu include a swimming pool and charming, fully stocked bar area.
Kruger National Park plays host to a vast, free roaming array of impressive mammals, including Burchell's Zebra, African Buffalo, impala, lion, black and white rhino, cheetah, leopard, elephant, and hippopotamus, as well as various reptiles and water creatures, and five hundred and seventeen distinct bird species.

"Myself, husband and two teenage/adult daughters stayed here for four days for a safari package recently. The setting is out of this world on the river where hippos live, the accommodation is perfect for the setting and allows you to sit on the decking and see every species come to drink throughout the day. The staff are friendly and helpful and work hard to enhance your experience, nothing is too much trouble. The food is fantastic. The guides were knowledgeable and enthusiastic. A special thank you to the camp manager and our brilliant safari guide. A 10/10 experience. Will return and recommend to all!!"
"We have just arrived from Shawu. We spent 5 nights there and we will never forget the nights with the hippos. The staff is fantastic (thank you Daniel and team!!!) and the game rangers (Simon, Dixon, Leonard, Victor and Maporo) are professionals and did great jobs. We saw the big five and so many animals. July is the best month to go there. Cold, sunny, no mosquitoes, no snakes. Perfect."
"It was our first time in Kruger but it won't be our last! Thanks to our incredible Ranger Sifiso and to Daniel who is always there for you, the ladies who are always smiling and go out of their way to please you, our trip has been so satisfying and unforgettable."
"This was easily our favourite place we stayed in on a trip through Mozambique, South Africa, Botswana and Zambia. The location is marvelous and accommodation is lovely. The whole side of the room opens up onto the lake where we saw at least 14 different animals, not counting birds. Lovely decoration, thoughtfully arranged, including a lovely bath which you can sit in while watching the wildlife just a few metres away. Probably the best part was the food. A great selection and probably the best steak I've ever tasted, followed by the nicest lamb chops I've ever eaten the following evening. The amount of food on offer was quite remarkable too... must have gained a couple of kilos in just a few days. The game drives are brilliant fun and we saw some amazing sites, including three separate groups of lions, the big 5 and loads more... highlight was seeing two lions mating, we stopped about 6 feet away and they didn't even notice us! The guides were very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. It's such an advantage being on a private concession as you have the sites to yourself. There were never more than 2-3 trucks around at any point, compared to 30 or more cars you would get stopping at anything of interest in the rest of the park. Sweet seclusion! We also stayed as the sister camp Shonga for two nights which was equally welcoming and lovely, though Shawu just tipped it by being by the lake."
"We would come there again. Perfect lodge. Only 10 persons are in the lodge. We had luck to see the big 5 on one day. Very friendly staff and the meals are more than delicious. the hippo lake in front of the open shower is just perfect as the unique space."
"The overall experience was fantastic and we got to see all of the Big Five which was apparently very lucky! On only 4 drives we saw all of them up close, including a pair of adult lions eating a fresh kill right beside the lodge road on the final day, and a cheetah perched on a tree also right beside the road, calling to his mate..it was more than we could have hoped for! The accommodation was really lovely, although they were not really prepared for the cold snap that hit on arrival, and the tented room was freezing. It was also suggested that we only used the fire sparingly as they had a gas shortage! Not what I would have expected from a 4 star lodge...they should have pre heated the room for our arrival back from the safari each night. There was also communication issues re our dietary requirements and they were not prepped to cater for my gluten free diet which was extremely disappointing. To pay so much and read so much about the lovely food, and then be given a salad (in freezing weather) because that was the only option they had on hand...not OK. Gluten free does not equate to 'eat what boring/inappropriate options we can muster together, or a normal meal with the gluten bits removed'... in a 4 or 5 star establishment, they should create GF versions of the same meal options as the other diners...I pay the same, why should my culinary experience be second rate?!..especially as they should have had 6 months notice! There was no option given to me when the other diners were able to enjoy freshly baked cakes & muffins...other than an apple on one occasion. Very disappointing."
"We have just returned from the best three days of our life staying at Camp Shawu in Kruger National Park. This was our first game viewing experience and to say we had the best camp and the best guide is an understatement! The Camp itself is beautiful and quiet (for a morning we were the only ones there). It can take up to 10 people as it only has 5 lodges each one for a couple to stay in. The rooms are directly on the watering hole and each one has it's own private deck to look out and watch whatever animals happen to pass by. There is a huge bath (big enough for two people!) and an outdoor shower so you can watch the hippos while you take a shower in the morning. Everything is clean and beautifully appointed so it is easy to relax when you come back from a game drive. The rest of the Camp is also lovely and there is a plunge pool for when things are very hot, together with a bar and a communal area for sitting and relaxing. When we were there we asked them to put the tables together so the few of us that were there could eat together, which was lovely as we were able to share our experiences of what we had seen on the game drives and get to know people a bit better. Daniel the manager was lovely and explained how everything worked and when we would go out on the drives and when we had free time etc. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff at the camp and every effort was made to ensure we had a wonderful time. Nordick was our guide and ranger and he is an incredibly skilled and entertaining person to go on game drives with. He spotted leopard, lion and hyena at what seemed like huge distances and was able to maneuver the truck to within a few yards of the animals so we had some really amazing photos to take away with us. Despite our close proximity to the amazing wildlife of Kruger Park we felt safe and secure at all times and were confident in Nordick's ability to deal with any situation that might arise. If you are planning to book a stay at Camp Shawu make sure you request Nordick when you book and you won't be disappointed."
"We had a fantastic wildlife experience at Camp Shawu. The comfortable, eco-friendly Lodge blends well into the bush and is designed to enable one to see and hear the animals at close quarters day and night, as it overlooks a huge waterhole. The Lodge and its chalets allow the visitor to constantly watch a large variety of animals coming down to drink from early morning to evening. One has the feeling of really being in the bush, rather than in a brightly lit, large Lodge which does not belong in the bush. Our accommodation was a very spacious, luxury tent/chalet with its own private deck overlooking the waterhole, so that we could watch game drinking at the waterhole from our room. We loved the secluded outdoor shower. The Lodge was very well organised and the staff were extremely courteous, helpful, efficient and friendly. The food was good and we enjoyed it all. The atmosphere of the camp was relaxed and friendly, very quiet, peaceful and private, so that one could appreciate the sights and sounds of the bush. Our game ranger, Siphiso, was exceptional and his knowledge of animals and birds was outstanding... He went out of his way to find us the most memorable game experiences, and we were fortunate to see a huge pride of lion with cubs, a group of cheetah, two lions mating, a huge herd of buffalo, and many excellent sightings of rhino, elephant and hippo. We even saw a black rhino - which is a very rare sighting. To top it all, when we spent time back at the camp each day, we regularly saw huge numbers of hippo, elephant and buffalo as well as groups of wildebeest, impala, zebra and other game. Our experience at Camp Shawu was magical. I would definitely recommend it to anyone."
"We have just arrived back from Shawu and I can only describe this place as magical, we spent 3 nights at there I can honestly say it was one of the best experiences of my life to date. Our Guide and ranger Dixon was fantastic as we saw so many animals. The staff are also fantastic and we could not have asked for more, the rooms are clean and relaxing and the outside shower a hit as I have never showered before watching Hippo. I cant wait to go back thanks you to Daniel and all the team"
"What a location! The camp is right on the edge of a dam which was a magnet for all kinds of animals. In a single afternoon just sitting in our tent waiting for the safari drive we saw: hippo, rhino, elephants, lion, giraffe, zebras, bush pigs and impala. The drives were equally rewarding, especially on the day we managed to see all of the big 5. Our guide Isaac had a dry sense of humour and an amazing knowledge of the flora and fauna."
