Dugong Beach Lodge occupies 30 000 hectares of pristine wilderness in the Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary - the first privately managed national park in Mozambique. In this idyllic setting, guests can experience the tranquillity of this unspoilt paradise on Mozambique’s coastline, with crystal clear water, colourful reefs and white beaches.
The lodge offers ten beach chalets and two luxury villas, offering breath-taking views over the Vilanculos seascape, interrupted only by the white sails of traditional dhows. There is a pool and island-style bar overlooking the turquoise waters.
The lodge offers 12 units in total. There are ten one-bedroom chalets and two two-bedroom villas. All units have direct beach access via individual walkways, as well as the option of twin or queen size beds. Each bedroom features an en-suite bathroom, and each unit has a separate outdoor shower. Guests can also enjoy private dinners or wellness treatments on the private patio.
The two villas differ in that they have two bedrooms, with either twin or queen size beds and they offer a private plunge pool.
At the lodge itself, guests can relax in a pool with a drink in hand and admire the ocean views. An island style bar under the Msasa trees offers cocktails and other refreshments. For dinner, guests can enjoy local Portuguese cuisine and fresh seafood. A jetty juts out over the warm, clear waters, providing a picturesque setting for a sundowner.
Nearby, at the marine sports centre, there are activities for everyone. Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy fly or deep-sea game fishing. The nearby Bazaruto Archipelago is one of the top scuba and snorkelling sites in the world and the reefs are home to hundreds of species. Sunset cruises and dhow trips are a must, as is a day trip to the Bazaruto Archipelago.
Guests can picnic on the deserted islands half an hour by boat from the lodge, or go kayaking in the calm, protected waters. Walks within the 30 000 hectare sanctuary provide ample opportunity to view small game and spectacular birdlife. Windsurfing, skiing, and tubing provide excitement for the more adventurous guests, while sailors can enjoy a day on a Hobie Cat.
An Ocean Safari provides the unique opportunity to view the amazing variety of life that the Indian Ocean has to offer.
Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary is unique in that one can experience land animals and marine life all in the same place. A morning visit to God’s Window promises sightings of Bushbuck, Duiker, Steenbuck, Guinea Fowl, Monkeys, Mongooses, Zebra, Impala, Kudu and Giraffe.
An Ocean Safari, on the other hand, offers beautiful and varied marine life. Shallow and deep water reefs are home to a magnificent population of sub-tropical fish, corals, Nudibranchs, starfish and more. Huge flocks of pelicans and flamingos are a sight to behold. In the deeper sea, large game fish such as marlin and barracuda can be spotted, as can whales, dolphins, and turtles. Among the rare creatures one can see are Whale Sharks, Leatherback Turtles, and the endangered Dugong.

"We did not want to leave! My wife and I spent 5 days in this paradise. Bruised and tired from safari we were greeted at the airport and driven to Vilanculos harbor where a boat awaited us to take us to the lodge. We had visited the web site for the Dugong Lodge and were duly impressed, but nothing could have prepared us for the beauty of the location and the lodge. The staff were nothing short of excellent, attending to our every need ensuring that our time at the lodge would be a truly memorable experience, and it was."

"Holiday of a lifetime We stayed at Dugong for 5 nights, coming here from Lakeside Lodge after a safari. The warmth and relaxed atmosphere of Dugong was exactly what we needed after a week of getting up early - which we expected - to see the animals. The staff at Dugong could not do enough for us, we certainly had 5* treatment from all of them."
