Kapama Game Reserve
Wilderness refined by time
Kapama Game Reserve
Kapama is a Greater Kruger reserve adjacent to the national park, founded by the Roode family. The 32,000-acre concession is one of the larger privately-owned reserves in the region and home to four owner-operated lodges plus the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre.
- Is Kapama inside the Kruger National Park?
- Kapama is a privately owned reserve adjacent to the Kruger National Park in the Greater Kruger area. The reserve shares unfenced borders with other private concessions, allowing wildlife, including the Big Five, to move freely across the region. Game drives are conducted by private rangers on exclusive traversing areas with strict vehicle limits at sightings.
- How do I get to Kapama?
- Fly from Johannesburg or Cape Town to Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport, roughly an hour in the air. The reserve gate is ten minutes from the airport, and your lodge arranges a complimentary transfer. Self-driving from Johannesburg takes approximately five hours via the R40.
- What is the difference between the four Kapama lodges?
- River Lodge and Southern Camp are the most accessible, both from around R15,000 per person per night, fully inclusive. Buffalo Camp is elevated in the treetops for a more secluded feel, from R16,000. Karula is the flagship with contemporary design and expansive suites, from R32,500. Jabulani is centred on its resident elephant herd, from R28,000. All include twice-daily game drives, meals and selected drinks.
- Is Kapama suitable for children?
- Yes. Kapama is one of the few Greater Kruger reserves that welcomes children at every lodge. River Lodge and Southern Camp run dedicated children's programmes, and family suites are available. There are no minimum age restrictions across the portfolio.
- Is Kapama a malaria area?
- Yes, Kapama falls within a low-risk malaria zone. Most visitors take prophylactic medication as a precaution, particularly during the wetter months from October to April. Your safari specialist can advise on the latest recommendations.
- What is included in the rate?
- All Kapama lodge rates are fully inclusive of twice-daily game drives with experienced rangers and trackers, all meals, selected drinks, and transfers from Hoedspruit Airport. The only extras are premium spirits, spa treatments, and the on-site Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre visit.

The Kapama Game Reserve way
Why Kapama Game Reserve.
Kapama sits in the Greater Kruger with Big Five roaming freely across 13,000 hectares of unfenced bush. What sets it apart for our safari specialists is accessibility: Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport is ten minutes from the reserve gate, with daily flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town. Most guests are on a game drive within an hour of landing.
The reserve runs four lodges across three price tiers, so the choice comes down to what matters most to you. River Lodge and Southern Camp are the most affordable at around R15,000 per person per night, fully inclusive. Buffalo Camp sits in the treetops, accessible only by elevated walkways, from R16,000. Karula is the flagship, light-filled and contemporary, from R32,500. Jabulani, the elephant-interaction property, sits between them at R28,000. All rates include twice-daily game drives, meals, selected drinks and transfers from the airstrip.
Children are welcomed at every Kapama lodge, which is uncommon in the Greater Kruger's private reserves. Dedicated children's programmes run at River Lodge and Southern Camp, and family suites are available across the portfolio. For first-time safari visitors or families with younger children, this is often the property our safari specialists recommend first.
Booking through safari.com costs the same as booking direct. Our safari specialists build the full trip, coordinating flights, transfers, and extensions to Cape Town, the Garden Route or Victoria Falls, and reply in as little as 15 minutes during working hours.
