Kwafubesi Tented Safari Camp, which means the “Place of the Giant Eagle Owl”, is tucked away on the edge of the Mvubu plain in the private Mabula Game Reserve, offering an intimate safari experience with romantic oil lamps and home cooked meals.
Kwafubesi boasts five luxurious en-suite canvas Tents that are spacious and decorated in rich African colors. The elevated tents are positioned to offer complete guest privacy and the most spectacular views of the African bush. Each tent features double or twin beds draped with mosquito netting, a full en-suite bathroom and an outdoor patio with comfortable seating.
Kwafubesi Tented Safari Camp offers all the facilities one would expect from a four-star tented camp with indoor and outdoor dining areas, bar and lounge area, swimming pool, and campfire. Additional facilities offered at the neighboring Mabula Game Lodge and available to guests include a spa, superette, curio shop and tennis courts.
On-site activities include in-room massages, twice daily game drives conducted in open safari vehicles, horseback safaris, guided bush walks, eco-adventure trails and guided star gazing. Guests also have full access to all other activities available at Kwafubesi's sister lodge Mabula Game Lodge, as well as their private airstrip.
Home to around 60 mammals, 300 bird species, 100 plant types and numerous reptile and insect species, Mabula Private Game Reserve is the heartland of the safari experience and wonderful Limpopo accommodation. Here, all nature's wonders are revered, from the 'Big Five' (Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Elephant, and Rhino); to the 'Small Five' (Ant Lion, Leopard Tortoise, Buffalo Weaver, Elephant Shrew and Rhino Beetle).

"We chose to go to Kwafubesi Tented camp at the last minute and had 3 nights and 3 days of total relaxation. We were always met by the the staff after every game drive with a welcome back sherry. Our guide Chris was a very knowledgeable, personable and entertaining. All the staff were very friendly but discreet. There are only 5 tents in the camp and the animals can wander through the camp. Many animals - except for the elephants - do wander through. The tents are very comfortable, with a full bathroom. Each tent is very private. The food is plentiful and they make it their business to check dietary requirements. The game drives were very informative and even though we are very season game viewers we learnt quite a lot. There are most of the usual animals but seeing the Roan antelope , Fish Eagle and the scorpion were some of the unusual sightings. The bonus is that the night sky out there is just as interesting as the animals during the day. Staying at the tented camp, in my opinion, is better than staying at the main lodge. Also it helps if you can appreciate stunning scenery as Mabula is in the foothills of the beautiful Waterberg Mountains. It was a lovely way to see in the New Year."

"Fantastic midweek break. Good game drives and great meals. Highly recommended. The staff were friendly and went out of their way to ensure that our stay was a memorable one. The candles in the bathroom and complimentary bottle of wine for our anniversary was a lovely gesture."

"Mabula is a little over 2 hours out of Johannesburg. Just far enough to feel like you are leaving home but not so far that 'are we there yet?!' starts cropping up. The service throughout was very good. Everyone was friendly, considerate and helpful. We had a dedicated game ranger for our morning and evening outings and, although he was a youngster (we teased him because it seemed to matter) he was very knowledgeable. I only know this because the other rangers would fact check with him often. The room was clean and comfortable, with all the usual amenities. Great water pressure always gets extra points! Meals were all buffet style. This had me worried as I am not a fan. The kitchen team executed brilliantly and my concerns were quickly squashed. Every dish was tasty and well presented. The wine selection was also good. All and all, a very enjoyable long weekend that ended too soon."

"A lovely weekend away, 2 hours from JHB and easy to find. Very reasonably priced and very nice and helpful staff. The camp is small and intimate with max 10 people that can stay there so its not too commercialized. The food was nice, not incredible but nice. The game ranger was very knowledgeable and professional. Overall it was a great weekend and would definitely go back!"

"This was our fourth time here. This was the fourth time we had a great experience at this tented camp. Two game drives, dinner and breakfast. The ranger and the camp staff were friendly, helpful and fun to interact with. If you have the opportunity, definitely take it, you'll be glad you did."

"For a weekend bush get away, close to Joburg, excellent. Just what I needed. Very good staff, loved the tented camp, very comfy. All in all a great way to spend a weekend without going all the way down to the Kruger"

"Such an awesome experience! Food was amazing, accommodation was amazing and service was amazing. Had two fantastic game drives a day with an awesome ranher and sun downers. A great escape to the wild. Worth every cent. Will be back soon."

"We as a family booked the whole Kwafubesi tented camp. A relaxed and lovely weekend. Special thanks to Grant who's been great! Always patient with us as a family, friendly, informative, tried his best to show us the big 5 - saw 4 and made each trip memorable. Walked all of us to our rooms at night - early & late nights. Before a drive - asked preferred drinks for the trip. Chef Stephan did a great job and his staff Margaret, Mpho & Annemarie were great & friendly. Stephan requested before our arrival our preferred drinks and food requirements. The tents were beautiful, clean and well looked after. A weekend away from city life not a long drive and a memorable family gathering."

"We just recently stayed a night at Kwafubesi and it was so good. Game viewing was good. Our ranger Christian was great, Stephan the chef was so friendly and the rest of the staff were so nice and welcoming. It is rather rustic but the camp now has electricity which is great. I would go there again anytime."
- Nicky
"We were lucky enough to stay at Kwafubesi for two nights in November. Having been recommended by a friend I knew it would be nice. I didn't realise how incredible it would be though! The accommodation was out of this world and we even had our own personal chef! Rohan our guide was brilliant, so helpful and knowledgeable. We saw all the animals we wanted to and will definitely be back! A wonderful stay in a magical place."
