Beyond your wildest dreams

Tintswalo Lapalala, Waterberg, Limpopo

This intimate and family friendly tented camp is set within a game reserve of 44 500 hectares featuring an abundance of wildlife and incredible views. It’s an untouched bushveld paradise. You’ll enjoy true luxury and privacy with only seven tented suites, and each has its own plunge pool.
Hospitality is outstanding, and we relished meals served in unique locations, from a bush breakfast to a picnic next to the Palala River followed by a swim in pristine clear water, and sundowners overlooking the rolling mountains and plains of the Waterberg. Children of all ages are welcome and the lodge offers fun and interactive experiences to keep the little ones entertained. Children under five stay free of charge and 5–15-year-olds pay 50% of the adult sharing rate.
Decor and tent names have been carefully selected to represent Africa’s iconic tribes. Tintswalo at Lapalala Wilderness truly is the epitome of luxury.

Good to know: Malaria-free; a three-hour drive or 30-minute flight from Johannesburg; Big Five safari with the chance to spot rare and endangered wildlife such as aardwolf, black rhino, roan antelope and brown hyena.
Cost: Specials at time of print range from R4 900 per person sharing, inclusive of meals, beverages and few extras.

From farming to conservation

Stoffels Rus Self-Catering Log Cabin, Karoo Gariep Nature Reserve, Hanover

Karoo Gariep Nature Reserve in the Northern Cape is your perfect Karoo escape this winter, and you might even experience snow. This quaint self-catering unit comes with two bedrooms that sleep up to four. It comes with a fully equipped kitchen, but you can book meals on request. The owner has declared his farm a nature reserve and you can enjoy sundowners on the Seekoei River while listening to the grunt of hippo. They also offer game drives, when you will spot buffalo and other antelope. While winter might be a bit chilly for night drives, black-footed cat is worth going out for. We spotted resident owls in a large tree adjacent to the cottage, and blue crane find a safe haven on the property too.

Good to know: It gets freezing cold in this part of the world, so make sure you pack enough warm gear.
Cost: The cottage is R1 800 per night for up to four people.

Romancing the Waterberg

Lady Africa Bush Lodge, Limpopo

Lady Africa Bush Lodge is situated on a game-breeding farm just 60km from Mookgopong, close to the village of Sterkrivier. With eight tents and a number of shared facilities (fridge, stove and swimming pool), the bush camp is perfect for groups. Four tents have their own outside bathtub, plunge pool and kitchen, creating the perfect private experience. The honeymoon suite comes with a spa bath, perfect for romantic evenings. The owners respect guests’ privacy, but are always available in case of emergency. We would recommend a picnic next to the river, a walk on one of their hiking trails (some have views over plains with the Waterberg in the background), or cool down in one of the pools or private plunge pool if weather permits.

Good to know: Self-check-in allows the freedom to arrive late. The property is pet friendly, but dogs should be leashed.
Cost: From R590 (bush tents), R1 095 (safari tents) and R1 395 (honeymoon suite) – one double bed per tent. Discounts apply during June and July and there are specials for pensioners throughout the year.

The ultimate luxury land-based marine safari

Lekkerwater Beach Lodge, De Hoop Nature Reserve, South Africa

Just over three hours’ drive from Cape Town, Lekkerwater Beach Lodge at De Hoop is located in the stunning De Hoop Nature Reserve. Undoubtedly one of the most glorious coastal reserves in Africa, the area’s extraordinary beauty and seclusion led former president FW de Klerk to select it for his own version of Camp David. The reserve is famous for some of the best whale watching on the planet: in July and November southern right whales and their offspring flock here in their hundreds from Antarctica. You’ll also spot pods of dolphin and a wide variety of marine life – it’s the ultimate, land-based marine safari.

Cost: Starting at USD 2 950. All prices quoted are per person per night (x2 for the two night stay) and include all accommodation on a sharing basis; all meals, all local drinks, road transfers to/from the lodge’s car park 6km away, all daily activities and VAT.
