Sabi Sabi was founded in 1979 by Hilton and Jacqui Loock, and remains a single-family-owned reserve within Sabi Sand. It pioneered photographic-only safari tourism in South Africa at a time when most surrounding properties were still hunting concessions.

Sabi Sabi has been family-owned since 1979, set on a private concession within the Sabi Sand Game Reserve that shares an unfenced boundary with Kruger National Park. The guides here have tracked the same territory for decades, and the wildlife is thoroughly habituated. Leopard sightings, in particular, are routinely closer and longer than at almost any other reserve in the region.
