Reviews

"Met at airport by car and on arrival welcomed with tea. Room very comfortable - even electric blanket if required. Food was very good & plenty of it. Drives out were excellent, our guide Kelly was so knowledgeable about animals, birds & plants we learnt a lot. Hope to go again soon. Other family members have also been to this reserve & really enjoyed the whole experience."

"The time we spent at Tau flew by. The game drives were fantastic, and Mike could not do enough on the drives. Saw the big five and more, and every outing had something special on offer. Tumi, Godfrey and the rest of the staff could have not have been friendlier. Madikwe is a well managed reserve with an abundance of game."

"I visited the Tau Game Lodge a few days ago and was absolutely amazed by this untouched hectares of graze for the big five. I must give five star client service to Godfrey who was just amazing in all the questions asked and answered by him. Truly a real ambassador for the lodge. Keep it up!! You are truly an inspiration to me. I already send my pictures of the lodge to my corporate counter parts and they will definitely make bookings to support you."

"I visited Tau Game Lodge for the day and really enjoyed my afternoon/evening there. I will try to stay for a couple evenings the next time I am in the area. Beautiful area with lots to see! Lunch was lovely with a great view overlooking a small lake (watering hole) and preparing for the wildlife we were about to see (we saw elephants, wildebeest, crocodiles, birds and a large antelope-type at this watering hole). There is also a gift shop in the lodge which had a great selection for souvenirs and gifts. Dylan was our guide and he was excellent. He really knew the details about what we were viewing and made an effort to track the animals. I could tell that he had studied this as he could explain things scientifically or in lay-people terms for us all to enjoy what we were viewing. He is knowledgeable and passionate about what he does and it shows. Of course nothing can be guaranteed in the wild, but we saw a pride of six lionesses which were entertaining to watch. We saw bull elephants, a bunch of zebra, and even a very rare small cat (I forgot its name). I got to see my first ever white rhinos and it made my week! The cat and the rhino sighting were at night as we drove back to the lodge and Dylan had a flashlight on - he never gave up and we were so lucky to catch those rare animals at night when I thought we had pretty much finished! Great effort and memorable adventure!"

"Tau Lodge is in the 4th largest game reserve in South Africa. The lodge is well maintained and each cabin looks out over the water hole, even at the driest there is still water and lots of animals come into drink. We had elephants, buffalo, zebra, kudu, impala, warthog and several others. On the game drives, we saw about 22 different animals in one day, and that included 4 of the big five. We did see a leopard on the way out of the park so then we had the Big 5. You could not beat the service, from the house keepers, the restaurant staff, the bar staff, hotel management and of course the guides, their knowledge is great and the show a passion for the land and the animals. It is at the end of the winter and it is very dry, but the number of animals was many. I was there for a conference and the facilities were fantastic. They have separate conference facilities and looked after us well. It also has a nice pool and good waiter service, a good spot to rest before the afternoon drive. They also help look after the local schools, primary and secondary. You can take books pens etc. and you can also plant a tree at a very reasonable cost, I got a peach tree for the primary school. Overall it was a great 4 days. I definitely want to go back."

"The lodge is situated next to a waterhole. Thanks to this waterhole you will be able to see a lot of animals already from your own balcony! We had elephants only a couple of meters from ourselves while relaxing on our balcony. The lodge itself is nice. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Breakfast, lunch and dinner was also very good. Free wifi is available in the main lodge area but not in the rooms itself. Murray was our ranger for the four game drives. He made absolutely sure that we had the best experience we could get. He is very knowledgeable about the reserve and everything that lives in it. He listened to your questions and did his utmost best to get you to the animals you'd like to see. The reserve has not received any rain for a long time so there were always animals to find around the few remaining waterholes. We saw everything we wanted to see. Among them the leopard, black rhino, African wild dogs and spotted hyena's. The leopard was high on our list since we had not been able to spot it yet on our 6 other game drives in 3 different reserves before coming here. On our last game drive we finally spotted the leopard in a tree with a kill in his mouth! Thanks for all the staff and especially Murray for the great experience! We will advise this lodge and reserves to our friends and family for sure!"

"Our party of 8 recently spent 3 nights at Tau leading up to our daughter's wedding in Pretoria. THE PRO'S To the person, the management and staff were at all times highly professional and accommodating, and nothing was too much for them - ever. Our game ranger/guide, Ignatius (Iggy) was absolutely brilliant. There wasn't a question asked (and there were many) which he was incapable of answering. He constantly challenged us to use our common sense, since it is way too easy just to slip into neutral and ask questions without first trying to use a little logic. We all appreciated that, and Iggy's wonderful dry sense of humour. He is an asset to Tau. With the exception of leopard, Iggy saw to it that we saw the remainder of the big 5 up close (and I mean close!) and personal. Seeing cheetah and endangered Wild Dogs was the cherry on the cake, and some of us even witnessed drama at the water hole when a spooked waterbuck took a detour through the water hole and was tackled by a crocodile which bit off more than it could chew and abandoned its potential meal, enabling it to live another day. Our rooms were always spotless and unobtrusively cleaned and maintained, all with a verandah overlooking the lodge's water hole. The drought has not escaped Madikwe, but it is a credit to the lodge management that they were constantly able to supply the numerous visiting animals with water, even cleverly recycling grey water from the lodge. The meals were all superbly prepared and the breakfasts sumptuous. The drinks, wine in particular, are extremely well-priced, and cost even less than one would expect to pay at most restaurants. CONS: Absolutely none! Go Tau, you rock... and we'll be back."

"Just sensational. The staff in Tumi, Godfrey, Kelly, all the Rangers and especially our Ranger Dylan and all the food and beverage staff were simply superb. Love this place - the drives, the hospitality, the people are all wonderful! I will be taking my family here one day! 2004, 2006 and 2015 for now! See you again soon Tau, Matla and Madikwe!!!"

"I visited Tau in March 2015 with a friend for 5 days. This was our first safari and Tau did not disappoint. The game drives with Dylan were amazing and breathtaking. There is nothing like being in the African bush especially at sunset. The spa treatments were so great I went 2 days in a row first for the facial and then the best massage ever. Tumi arranged our visit to the local high school and elementary school to donate school supplies. The food was excellent and the hospitality was the best!!! Great staff!!! Godfrey was wonderful and made sure we were well taken care of during our entire stay. Even our road transfers to and from Johannesburg were comfortable and well organized by Tau. I recommend Tau Game Reserve to anyone looking for an amazing adventure. Tau is truly a first class game lodge."

"I traveled here with my mother. This is an upmarket Game Lodge in the North of the Madikwe Reserve. It's all excellent. The lodge is situated around a waterhole that ensures a steady supply of animals for when you are not on a drive. The rooms all appear to have a water view when the waterhole is full. The staff were without exception fantastic. Attentive, but not pushy. Particular thanks must go to the guides who were enthusiastic and put a lot of effort into ensuring that we all saw a good variety of animals in a lovely way. The food was great and the drinks were reasonably priced. My mother hadn't been on safari before and thought it was perfect. It really was."
