Situated in the heart of the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, which makes up the western boarder of the Kruger National Park. Without fences inhibiting the free movement of game between the reserves, Timbavati becomes part of a vast unspoilt natural wilderness area that lies within the Greater Kruger National Park.
Sitting majestically on the banks of a dry river bed, Kambaku River Sands entices the guest to sit back and relax. Kambaku (Solitary Bull elephant), takes its name from one of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ tuskers who roamed the Kruger Park for the greater part of the last century. These elephant were renowned for their impressive tusks – having at least one tusk with the estimated weight of over 60kg.
This unfenced camp is perfectly situated on a perennial river with continuous free flowing movement of game both big and small through the camp.
Guests at Kambaku River Sands are often afforded a safari experience with a difference from either their own private decks or the main lodge area, with almost daily up close and personal experiences with elephant, buffalo and bushbuck to name but a few.
The main lodge has a spacious lounge with two enormous open fireplaces for the cool winter nights. The bar allows for guests to watch elephants drinking out of the swimming pool while enjoying a cold beer or chilled glass of wine.
All 10 suites are elegantly decorated, and boast private viewing decks with spectacular views of either the dry River bed or the surrounding bush. All sliding doors are protected with mosquito netting and beds draped with classic white satin nets. Sit back and indulge in the elegance of your suite. Room facilities include a mini bar, butlers tray as well as a variety of guest amenities, outdoor shower and air conditioning.
With its high thatched roof overlooking the Kambaku River Sands waterhole. The spacious surroundings of the Main lodge allow for guests luxurious comfort of the lounge, Kambaku River Sands boasts uncapped WIFI in our Main Lodge area.
Being unfenced, the camp allows for free movement of game through the lodge. Game drives provide the ideal opportunity to track down the Big 5 and more. We offer bush walks with the space to explore the smaller gems of the bush, and the time in camp during the heat of the day, to observe relaxed animal behaviour from the peace and quiet of your own personal deck.
Game drives are in an uncovered vehicle - allowing for excellent photographic opportunities, with experienced rangers passionate about the bush.

"The Kambaku River Sands is a wonderful safari lodge in the heart of Timbavati. When we arrived at the River Sands, we instantly fell in love. From the moment you arrive your African safari dream start becoming a reality. When the door is opened for you to enter into your luxury room, your instantly indulged by the elegant decor, cleanliness, amenities and views. A few wild elephants where roaming the premises directly in front of our room upon arriving. There are three methods to shower with either cold or nice hot water, in a jacuzzi tub, shower glass stall or outside in a private setting with open view of the bush with possibilities of watching a family of elephants passing by, or possibility of watching a giraffe crossing your scenic view of the bush through reinforced glass as you relax into a bubble bath, both we experienced during our stay. The staff are all hospitable, respectable and friendly. The spa experience was amazing, perfect for mid day relaxation in between morning and afternoon safari drives. The food, wine cellar and dining experience will impress. The reserve itself is magical, we viewed the big five up close in person and had the privilege of coming face to face with one of less than 13 wild white lions in the planet. Whether you are celebrating a honeymoon, anniversary, photoshoot or any reason you wish to experience the wild in the mother land of natural wonders, my family and I recommend Kambaku River Sands. You will not regret making this your only destination or part of your safari package. Two things to note, WIFI is available 24/7 and is impressively fast inside your room and general area of the lodge premises, also the staff provide complimentary bug repellent inside the rooms, one less bulk and weight to worry about in your travel luggage. We already are planning our return for 2016. Thank you Kambaku River Sands for touching our hearts and for your dedication to the protection of wildlife and the bush. I expressed we rather not tell anyone about your reserve so to keep it all to ourselves, but you deserve great recognition."
"Up close and personal with the wildlife. Great location, accommodation, service and people. The entire team are wonderful. Each drive we would often sight 4 of the big 5 up close. Sometimes the elephants would be drinking from the pool whilst the guests are in the pool or drinking at the bar. An awesome experience all round."
"We visited Kambaku River Sands for 4 nights in November 2015 and had an incredible experience. This was our first safari and our games drives were really what made our trip so special. Our ranger (Pallance) and tracker (Kenneth) were excellent - despite some challenging weather conditions!! On one day we saw the Big 5 on both our morning and evening drives and we saw a good variety of animals on every drive. Pallance also shared a lot of information with us about the smaller animals, trees and broader ecosystem which was great. They were also careful to ensure we were always comfortable. The accommodation definitely has the wow factor. The 'houses' are very large with a huge bed, well stocked fridge and luxury bathroom (indoor shower, outdoor shower and corner bath). The unfenced camp adds an extra dimension of excitement and seeing the elephants drinking from the pool was very cool. All of the staff go above and beyond to ensure their guests are having a special experience. We were lucky enough to be the only couple staying on the camp for 2 of the nights which was particularly great. The food is excellent (thank you Godsave!). Brunch is a mixture of an English breakfast (bacon, eggs etc.) and other more lunch-like dishes e.g lasagne, pies and salads. High-tea consists of a delicious savoury and sweet snack which changes each day - we loved the sausage rolls and carrot cake! Dinner is a 3 course meal and was really yummy every night we were there - steak, kudo, chicken, lamb - lots of variety and beautifully presented! One evening we also ate in the River Bed which was a really special experience. The package only includes soft drinks and beer but wine and other drinks are reasonably priced. Highly recommended - thanks for a great stay!!"
"We had a great time, the location is marvelous and the room is really fantastic. Excellent service and very professional staff. And above all, exceptional game drives that allowed us to see all the big five!"
"We had a 18 night honeymoon including four nights here and I wish it had been longer as it was the highlight of the whole trip!! From the amazing game drives to the beautiful lodges and incredible staff the stay was magical and memorable. Thank you Kambaku we will never forget you !!!"
"Kambaku is a great lodge -- lovely surroundings with terrific and knowledgeable staff. I experienced some of the best game drives ever. Excellent food, too. Lodging is clean and spacious (also with great views)."
"Superb trip to a special corner of South Africa. Most helpful and friendly staff. Possibly some of the best game viewing with evening and morning drives! So fortunate to have seen a cheetah with its kill at sunset"
"Kambaku River Sands is an excellent place for game drives, comfortable rooms and very good food. The staff is terrific. I recommend it without hesitation. I particularly was impressed with our ranger whose knowledge of the animals, birds, and vegetation was impressive."
"This place is perfection. The lodge is comfortable, game viewing amazing, food varied, fresh and very tasty. Bryce the owner and his staff went to every available means to make our stay perfect. I can't recommend this place highly enough. We were truly sad to leave."
"We arrived for our honeymoon for 4 nights at Kambaku. From the moment of arrival we knew we are going to have a wonderful time! The welcoming was warm and the room was beyond expectations. The safari was amazing! Full of encounters with wild animals and professional explanations by our wonderful guides. The food was delicious, generous and diverse. The atmosphere is informal and family like. Highly recommended!!!"
