"Just returned from our South African vacation. This is absolutely a beautiful, first rate experience to view the incredible wild life up close and personal. Mike was an excellent ranger, very knowledgeable, and made sure we were comfortable at all times. The rooms are amazing, the food delicious, a very nice atmosphere and would very much recommend them."

"We cannot say enough good things about the extraordinary Rattray’s on MalaMala. Our khaya (home) had spacious sleeping and sitting areas, and a large veranda with a private outdoor shower and plunge pool, and an expansive view of the Sand River, where we watched a herd of elephants walk through the trees one afternoon right below where we were sitting. The separate his/hers bathrooms (and closets) were huge, and everything was decorated with timeless elegance and attention to appeal and comfort. With just eight khayas, for a total of 16 guests, Rattray’s offers an exceptional experience for those who want to make the most of their visit to South Africa. The excellent meals featured an abundance of choices, and Rattray’s managers Alex and Nerene provided incredible service and attention to our needs. Our ranger, Niel, was amazing. He had an astounding gift for finding/spotting animals, knowing how and where they would move, and positioning the land rover for the best, fabulous, viewing. We saw the big five, up close, and more than 15 other species, our first day alone. Rattray’s provided an experience that was outstanding in every aspect—from ambiance and accommodations to wildlife viewing. We highly recommend it."

"Just back from 4 days at Rattray's and Mala Mala. Overall experience was incredibly positive. Rattray's offers incredibly beautiful resort accommodations, but, more importantly, a staff that delights in delighting you plus access to all of the Big Five animals. Since there are only 8 villas in this camp ( Mala Mala Main Camp is a mile away) things are quiet offering us the chance to look out our villa window at elephants, Leopards and at night, Rhinos drinking at the river in complete silence. Since the property is private you rarely see another vehicle. You are basically out in the bush alone with the critters - isn't that great. Our Ranger guide, Gordon, was always able to access animals engaged in their natural activities (hunting, bathing in the water hole, eating and if a well fed big cat, sleeping on their backs in the sun.) Moonlight trips had us also out among incredible stars. Mala Mala field trips are off road which means our vehicle could go to where the animals were and not have to stay on roads (this off road capability is a must for successful animal viewing in Africa!). Imagine doing the big 5 in little more than an afternoon! Mala Mala staff respects the animals and lives together with them in peace. If you want lifetime memories like sitting in a silent jeep as 400 Cape buffalo surround you (within 10-20 feet) as they walk to the river for a drink. Or how about a leopard sitting on a hill 10 feet away watching you. Like elephants? How about 150 walking past you sheltering their little ones on either side of your jeep. All True! All unforgettable. Some weather facts......go in July. NO BUGS....temperatures in the high 60s/low 70s...except VERY Cool mornings until around 9am. Bring gloves and layer your clothing. We visited three camps and I found that I needed a turtle neck, a sports shirt, and two light jackets layered on me at the coldest time in the morning. By the middle of the day I was down to an open jacket and shirt. July travel means no rainy days....animals have to come out to get their water...it is easier to spot them in the reduced under growth. Don't go in the wet season...the bugs and heat will reduce the fun. Wife and I have been to 50+ countries (many exotic) throughout the world in our lifetime of adventure. We have been to other wonderful African camps.....Mala Mala is the standard by which all are measured. One could eat the food safely and the water was safe as well. Got home healthy with a lifetime of happy memories of being comfortably one with nature. If you are doing Africa safaris.......Mala Mala is a must. If you don't want the magnificance of Rattray's. go to the Mala Mala Main camp. After all this is about the animal experience not the hotel accommodations."

"Rattrays is very elegant with our private villa having a his and her bathroom, and outdoor plunge pool. All overlook the river Sand so great game viewing from your window and verandah when animals come in to drink. Furnishings colonial style luxury. Food was great, but all buffet style. Our ranger was superb and went to great lengths to give us the best game drives ever tracking the animals we were seeking (wild dogs for one!). Mala Mala has abundant game so we saw the big five daily and with only four maximum to a vehicle you get very personalized attention. Wonderful place, highly recommend and ask for Dave Landey to be your guide."

"Rattray's is one of the very best. From your personal safety to the accommodations & food. My ranger Roan was one of the best I've had. But seemingly all of The Rangers at Mala Mala are very knowledgeable, and very capable to try to fulfill your wishes. I traveled with my adult son."

"Most wonderful experience of a lifetime!"

"It's been more than 3 months since we were there, but the experience is as fresh as the first day we arrived. We were met at the airport for the drive to camp. When our vehicle pulled in at the camp, the Managers were standing outside waiting for us with the warmest welcome ever. I was overcome with tears for this was my dream trip come true. Our cabin was very classy with fabulous view of the river where the Buffalo were wading. The different sounds of the outdoors were music to our ears. We did not use our private pool because the weather was just a little cool for us Floridians. Our guide, Fritz was exceptional on finding animals on our two daily game drives. All the guides are cautious and are very careful with number one concern for safety. I must admit I sometimes became nervous being so close to the Lions and being in the middle of a herd of buffalo as they settled down for the night. We saw the big 5. When we returned from our early morning drive, our breakfast was waiting for us. Fritz ,our guide, took our order if we wanted something cooked to order. The meals were delicious. All of the staff from the chefs, servers and grounds keepers were so courteous seemed very willing to make sure we were happy. Occasionally some of the workers would do local dances. In the evening if the weather cooperated, we ate outdoors in the Boma. Fritz was willing to join us as part of the family. I cried when we arrived and cried when we had to leave. If you are considering an upscale Safari experience, this is the place to go."

"Rattray's on MalaMala is one of the finest lodges I have ever stayed in. Not only are the rooms beautifully decorated and appointed with fine accessories, linens and towels, the people are fabulous. The food is delicious and the private bar and dining area is a bonus. The rangers were knowledgeable and so much fun as well. Our family and friends had the entire Rattray's and it was magnificent. I highly recommend this property without any hesitation. It is worth every penny. Finally, the game viewing is spectacular. One will not be disappointed!"

"Wonderful wonderful wonderful. The villas are lovely with his and hers bathrooms, plunge pool (not heated), outdoor shower, deck, river view, sitting and dining area and very comfy bed but the safaris steal the show. Post afternoon safari There are pre-dinner drinks, followed by dinner in the boma, on the deck or in the restaurant with each set of jeep occupants sitting with their guide. The same applies at breakfast on the deck or in the restaurant. The service from all staff was great. The animal viewing was incredible. We had a very knowledgeable and affable guide, saw enough animals of all kinds including rare ones to populated a city, enjoyed sundowners in beautiful peaceful locations, had a birthday celebration in the bush and generally spent an incredible 5 nights and days. By the end we were tired but so so happy."

"We had a fabulous time at your beautiful Rattay Camp. As first-time safari visitors we were not sure what to expect, and this trip far exceeded our wildest expectations. Seeing animals in their natural habitats – up close and personal – was thrilling in a way we could not have imagined. Our ranger, Brendan Cole was outstanding – serving as guide, ranger, interpreter, and host. His driving skills were very impressive – he was able to pick the best vantage points and get us there safely and securely. He made it all come alive for us, seeking out different ways to experience the richness that is Mala Mala, and providing us with background stories on the individual animals and their prides, movements throughout the area, and environmental threats both in the wild and from man. His passion and dedication made all the difference in our understanding of what we were seeing. That said, we were able to see the Big Five within 24 hours and were able to see the “Big Seven” – including cheetah and wild dogs several times by the end of our stay. The camp is an amazing place to experience wildlife; the diversity is dramatic and represents great value for any safari visitor. Our khaya and all the accommodations were sumptuous and the meals were a delight. We were offered the opportunity to dine with others, including our guide, or on our own, and we chose to get to know the other safari guests and compare notes on wildlife sightings, Land Rover adventures and other memorable experiences. Our trip was made richer by sharing our experiences with others while enjoying our own private space. The food was delicious and we appreciated the opportunities to try new things and dine in different settings on various nights. We would certainly come back and will tell all our friends that this is the place to go to see the most wildlife while learning a tremendous amount, and enjoying the highest degrees of comfort and travel delights."
