The prestigious Shamwari Private Game Reserve covers 20 000 hectares of verdant bush along the Bushmans River in the Eastern Cape. The malaria-free reserve is home to five of the seven habitats found in South Africa, and its location close to the Garden Route, making a safari at Shamwari a perfect choice for those seeking to combine a tour of the Garden Route with a luxury Big Five safari.
Shamwari Long Lee Manor was built in 1910 and is Shamwari’s flagship lodge. This magnificent Edwardian five-star manor has been beautifully restored and offers a colonial experience in the heart of the African bush. Long Lee Manor offers exceptional comfort, a personalized service and spectacular views of the waterhole and plains that sweep down to the Bushman’s River.
The manor offers ten Suites and five Luxury Rooms, each boasting twin beds that can be converted into king beds, an en-suite bathroom with separate shower, satellite tv, minibar, air conditioning, tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryer, in-room safe, and a patio or balcony offering mountains or garden views.
The facilities offered at the manor include two swimming pools, a relaxation retreat, fitness center and steam room, dining room, outdoor boma, conference facility, and gift boutique.
Enjoy early morning and evening game drives that are led by professional guides and guided game walks that afford up-close encounters with the smaller wondrous creatures of the African bush. Visits can be arranged to Shamwari's Born Free Foundation Animal Rescue Centre, Ian Player Rhino Awareness Centre, and the Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.
Shamwari is home to a variety of plants, birds, and animals. Guests frequently sight the Big Five during their stay, along with cheetah, caracal, wild dog and a variety of antelope. Evening game drives often reveal the more rarely seen nocturnal creatures, such as the hopping springhare, aardwolf, and brown hyena.
The Shamwari Game Reserve is the perfect place for bird lovers, boasting over 250 bird species. The reserve is home to a number of raptor species including Black Harriers, Pale Chanting Goshawks, Black-shouldered Kites, Booted Eagles and Secretary Birds. The Bushman’s River meanders through the reserve providing a great refuge for kingfishers, darters, the African Shelduck, finfoots and the iconic African Fish Eagle.

"We spent 4 very special & memorable days here. Absolutely everything about our stay at Long Lee Manor exceeded our expectations. Our rooms were magnificent - luxurious and spacious with stunning views; all meals were 1st class and absolutely delicious; staff were warm, friendly, hospitable & made us feel so at home; our game ranger, Sarah was brilliant - extremely knowledgeable and we thoroughly enjoyed every game drive with her. Despite bad weather, Sarah never gave up on finding some kind of surprise for us. This included elephant & rhino stand off as well as serval in broad day light !! Thank you to everyone at Shamwari for such a wonderful & memorable stay !!"

"A total 5* exhilarating experience being so close to the large variety of animals seen on the daily game drives. Rangers are very knowledgeable & most patient and this added to the MAGIC of our stay, along with the always friendly and helpful staff. Top class comfortable accommodation and amazing food. A bush walk will be the cherry on the top for your stay. In all, highly recommended for a treat of a lifetime. Well done, Shamwari !"

"Everything about Long Lee Manor and the game drives are amazing. Our ranger Vuyo was fantastic and gave us such an adventure. The food was fantastic and the staff are all exceptional. I cannot recommend it highly enough and cannot wait to return. Just one note of advice, some people seem to think the animals are there just for us and can be conjured out of thin air to perform for us humans! They then get annoyed if it doesn't happen. We had some fantastic viewings and most were very close, an amazing experience. For fellow animal and wildlife lovers, I promise you will be in heaven."

"This was our first visit to Africa, so we don't have any bench marks but anything else will have to go a long way to top this experience. we stayed two nights at Long Lee Manor in September and it was just amazing. The hotel itself was superb - we had originally been booked in elsewhere but due to that accommodation being no longer available, we were moved to Long Lee Manor - and found ourselves in the honeymoon suite! We have never stayed in a room so large nor so well appointed! indeed, our only regret of the stay was that there were so many things to do that we saw very little of this fabulous room. The rest of the 'lodge' at the atmosphere of a large country house rather than a hotel, with endless supplies of great food and service that was just incredible. The safari drives themselves were another incredible experience. For sure, this is not the Kruger with vast herds and thousands of square miles of open space and the wildlife has to be 'managed', but the area of the reserve is about that of an English national park and you certainly don't feel that you are in any way confined. The real upside is that the rangers and guides (all of whom were extremely professional) get to have a good idea of where the animals might be found. And of course, you don't get the crowds of tourist either. For us, this was the perfect introduction to Africa and we wouldn't hesitate to go back to Shamwari and Long Lee Manor."

"From the moment you are met by the wonderful staff at Shamwari Game Reserve to the time you leave guests are treated wonderfully by the staff! Rooms are stunning & huge food is carefully prepared by capable chefs. The game drives that are included in your stay are exciting & brilliant. Our ranger Julius became like a family friend & went at great length to locate the harder to spot wildlife such as lions & cheetahs. The elephants were great too,so good to see them in natural surroundings. The only question is why anyone would want to leave this paradise!?"

"We sadly only had 2 nights at Shamwari but loved every moment of our visit. We had a very friendly, warm greeting on arrival at Longlee Manor and were delighted to check into a very spacious and comfortable room / suite. We had two bathrooms, a very large bedroom with super kingsize bed plus a separate sitting room...just for the two of us!! We unpacked and headed into the restaurant for the first of many lovely meals there. After a rather large lunch we were excited to head out on our first game drive. Despite the torrential rain, our ranger, Jess, greeted us with a smile and explained the routine. She then took 6 of us out and we had an incredible afternoon watching a herd of elephants splashing in the mud, many graceful giraffes through to the white rhino. The first evening we were treated to a Braai - South African BBQ - and were seated with our ranger and fellow guests, which was a great way to mix and share holiday experiences . We went out on 2 more drives with Jess the next day and would rate her knowledge, passion and friendliness very highly indeed. We were treated to some amazing animal sightings and couldn't have asked for more. The food (so much of it!) and accommodation at Longlee Manor were first class and all of the Shamwari staff were fantastic. And, as it was full board, we only had to pay for the drinks which were exceptionally good value. We would highly recommend this hotel and experience and hopefully it isn't just a once in a lifetime trip for us! A wonderful place with wonderful people who just want to make your trip memorable and enjoyable. Outstanding hotel and customer service!"

"This was our first ever safari and I must admit, I was a little nervous about it! But from the moment we arrived we could not have been looked after better. The service was excellent from everybody, the food fantastic and plenty of it. Our accommodation perfect. Our ranger Phillip was the best, he was brilliant, so knowledgeable, enthusiastic with a great sense of humour and fun. We learnt so much. We were so lucky and managed to see everything including the elusive leopard on our last morning game drive, thanks to Phillip's expertise. This is a trip we will never forget it was very special, especially the evening sun-downer, sipping a gin and tonic watching the sun set, magical. I cannot recommend Long Lee Manor and Shamwari high enough. One day we will return."

"Best 2 days I have ever spent with my family, our ranger Julius bought us close to the animals and all the big five. Teaching us new and fascinating things. The rooms were perfect. All of the staff were extremely kind and good fun! If you are going to Africa on safari, Shamwari - Long Lee manor is the place to go."
