Overview

Tucked into the sandstone dappled valley of the Limpopo river, soared over by the Mapungubwe National Park's majestic eagle population, Leokwe Camp is modeled on the Vendan Village design and is the ideal, self catering getaway.

Guests can take in the stunning panorama of this mopane woodland spectacle from one of the looking decks, indulge in bird watching from the boardwalk or at the bird hide, or simply take in the comfortable lodgings, rich in the cultural impression of the surrounding area.

Accommodation

Leokwe offers a range of cottages.

• Seventeen one bedroom thatched cottages are available for accommodation, complete with outdoor showers, two beds each and a double sleeper couch, air conditioning and ceiling fans, a bathroom with WC and shower, a kitchen, as well as a lapa and braai (barbecue) facilities.
Two of these cottages are wheelchair accessible

• Two family cottages are available, with two bedrooms each, each sporting two single beds, as well as air conditioning and ceiling fans, bathrooms with WCs and showers, a kitchen, as well as lapas with braai (barbecue) facilities.

Activities & Facilities

Leokwe Camp offers guests adventure in the form of guided bush walks and game drives, morning, afternoon and evening, all under the supervision of well informed and keen professionals. Important to note is that children under the age of six are not permitted on game drives, and children under the age of twelve are restricted from game walks.

A two-to-three hour heritage tour is available on request, as well as the popular three hour tree top walk.

Facilities at the camp include information from an observation deck and bird hide, a picnic area, swimming pool and sundeck, as well as a central braai area.

Important Information

• As a result of its large and dangerous game population, unguided walking is not permitted within Mapungubwe National Park. Activities such as walks, drives and visits to cultural attractions, can be arranged directly with the park.

• Filling stations are not available within the park, and guests should fill up adequately at Alldays or Musina, both about 70 km’s from the park, before arriving.

The Reception staff was very friendly and helpful. The campsite was great. We drove around in the park. Cellphone reception very poor. Would have expected the park to have access to things that would assist visitors when help is needed. A two way radio is advisable.

Congrats to all staff at Mapungubwe for the friendly service. Food was excellent. A must visit for all nature lovers.

The scenery at Mapungubwe is absolutely out of this world. The magnificent Baobabs are completely dwarfed by the massive Sandstone mountains and valleys. We saw an amazing leopard in a tree in the western Region of the park which was otherwise quite disappointing. Although we saw a fair amount of animals, there is not an abundance of wildlife. We were especially disappointed with the lack of birds. The reserve itself is beautiful, with the area at the confluence well designed, and well maintained. Although there were bins everywhere, we were disturbed by the amount of litter seen in odd places. We felt there should be more viewing points along the river. The accommodation is well designed, maintained and serviced. The kitchen was well appointed, a relief after travelling to Skukuza earlier this year!! The Heritage Tour is highly recommended, and a visit to the museum is a must!! Give yourself at least 4 days to get the maximum experience of the area.

Superb accommodation. The confluence is magnificent and the benches etc provided add to the wonderful ambiance. Staff are kind, friendly and very helpful.Arrived a little later than expected so need to visit you again, and will do so. Loved the museum and could have spent longer.

We took 8 foreigners to the camp for a night, we also did the heritage tour. The rooms, facilities and service from Mpungubwe gate to the service at the camp was outstanding. It was such a pleasure taking guests there. I highly recommend it!!!
