The detail

The landscape is lush with grassy woodlands, and broad, sweeping mountain ranges. It is the home of the famous Big Five.

Situated between two habitats, the sand forest and the grasslands, the glass walls of Phinda Forest Lodge offer a sweeping view of a unique ecosystem and is one of the world’s first eco-designed luxury lodges

The lodge features 18 glass-walled Suites, each raised on stilts between the sandy forest and surrounding trees. The suites feature luxurious en-suite bathrooms with slate hand basins, air conditioning, and viewing decks with comfortable seating and a minibar. It's common to see forest antelope grazing around the suites and hear the sounds of birds in song.

Phinda Forest Lodge is set in a calming atmosphere of Zulu Zen. And there’s no need to worry about the privacy of your retreat - in spite of the floor to ceiling glass walls, the towering torchwood trees and fertile forest floor that surround your suite ensure a sense of seclusion.

Phinda Forest lodge facilities include a sparkling rim-flow swimming pool at the edge of the forest, interactive kitchen, safari shop, traditional boma for open-air dining, WI-FI in the guest area and suites, as well as expansive decks in a spacious seating area where daytime meals are enjoyed whilst looking out onto panoramic views of an open meadow where animals frequently graze.

In the evenings, you are welcomed into a traditional lantern-lit African boma, where you enjoy a sumptuous dinner beneath a canopy of stars.

Adventures at &Beyond Phinda Forest Lodge include twice-daily game drives, bush walks, and seasonal river cruises. A host of additional activities can be enjoyed too. These include cultural excursions, scuba safaris and specialist safaris such as birding, photographic, tracking, family and luxury walking safaris.

Phinda Private Game Reserve's unique meeting of riverine and rare sand forest habitats is home to a huge selection of wildlife, including lion, giraffe, white and black rhino, antelope, elephants, leopard, buffalo, cheetah, and wildebeest, as well as 415 bird species.

Phinda Forest Lodge is ideal for solo explorers, couples and families looking for a unique safari experience.

Had an absolute fantastic time, the best game viewing and our guide Wayne was incredible. The food at Phinda is 5 star as well as the service, loved our stay!

What was fabulous here: the quiet setting of your lodge with nothing around but just pure nature you can admire through the glassed walls or from the lovely wooden terrace or the nice view you have from the dinning/bar place or the exquisite amenities, sleeping comfort or the all-inclusive plan or maybe the excellent game drives we had. It was our first time spotting the cheetah with cubs and we experienced the most unusual lion hunt: for 90 minutes we observed a hungry lioness digging after a warthog - a truly amazing experience. To improve: the boma dinner place was a little bit to crowded. Concluding: an exceptional mixture of thrilling safari and quiet and peaceful stylish lodge-in-the woods experience.

We have stayed at many game lodge in South Africa and Phinda Forest Lodge must rank as one of the best. Besides the great game viewing the facilities are top notch, the food was some of the best I've ever had at a game lodge and the service was friendly throughout. Recommended without any reservations.

For our first safari experience, our travel agent made us leave a week sooner to send us to Phinda Forest Lodge. We understood why as soon as we got to our room. A large floor to ceiling windowed space, surrounded by jungle and peace and quiet. Excellent service, a gifted chef ,dont miss the sorbets at lunch! Great game drives with much effort and knowledge put into finding the different animals we wanted to see. The advantage of a private game reserve, where you can be driven off road to view the cheetah from a few yards away justify the expense easily. A great 2 days seeing the big five and more, in a fine setting

Everything about Phinda - Forest Lodge was perfect - except we should have stayed longer. The accommodation was luxurious, the food was fantastic ... and of course the wildlife was spectacular! What I will remember - and cherish - most was the enormous smile on my son's face when, about 20 minutes into our first game drive, we saw our first pride of lions. It was the most sensational way to begin four days of wonderfully indulgent adventure!

Our forest lodge was a perfect place to relax between jeep rides out in Phinda Reserve. All units are private, superbly decorated, ultra comfortable. We even had Wi-Fi out in the deep forest plus a refreshing pool and patio area! The main lodge was open to an area where zebras & wildebeest grazed and baboons scurried. The food was simply delicious & plentiful, even when out on safari! Loved the "sundowner" drinks each evening. Our guide, Dave, and tracker, Thocks, made our rides unforgettable as we covered new territory every day. All staff goes out of their way to take care of guests. Love this place!

My husband and I recently spent two nights at Phinda Forest Lodge. Our stay at Phinda Forest Lodge was fabulous. Our accommodation in our glass walled chalet was exceptional. The food was very good although we think that the continental breakfast could have been a bit more substantial. We had dinner in the Boma on the last night of our stay and that was a real treat. The food prepared by the chef, David, was delicious. The morning and evening game drives were enjoyable. We saw the magnificent seven within 24 hours of our stay at the lodge. The amount of game appeared to be a bit sparse compared to what we have seen before at other game reserves, perhaps it had something to do with the time of year. All in all a highly enjoyable stay.

This secluded lodge in the sand forest of Phinda was truly a fabulous experience. Wonderful cabins that disappear into the bush, and you can choose whether to shut out the night with curtains and air conditioning or leave the windows open for ventilation and listen to the hyenas whooping it up. We chose the latter, and were rewarded with the most wonderful night noises (the mosquitoes stayed outside behind the screens). The bush experience was the best we have ever had in many years of bush breaks, largely because of the skill, sensitivity and determination of our ranger, Ross, and tracker, Musi. Ross showed us elements of the bush that no other ranger has ever bothered with, and his patience and doggedness rewarded us with many rare and wonderful sights, including two lionesses who are raising their cubs together. Thank you, Ross, for making this a unique experience. The food, service and general ambience of the lodge could not be faulted, and the forest picnic on our last night was magical. We will definitely go back, and back, and back.

Our experience at Phinda Forest Lodge was incredible. We saw amazingly beautiful settings with wildlife grazing so close to our safari vehicle that we simply could not believe it! Lions & cheetahs walked extremely close to us yet ignored our vehicle - we were totally fascinated that this could happen. We watched in awe as lionesses hunted & then ate their prey in the thicket. Our ranger, David, and his tracker, Thoks, were fabulous about finding all the game that we would want to see - even the elusive black rhino! We could not believe it. They made the whole experience at Phinda outstanding because of their terrific personalities & great knowledge about the game & the birds & plants. It was the best being on the game drives with them. Stopping for sundowners were, needless to say, what we looked forward to also! The rooms at Phinda were to die for! Fabulous beds, bathrooms & surrounded by nature that you could actually see through the glass walls. The food was delicious. We really had to stop ourselves from eating too much. We highly recommend it for couples that want a romantic, luxury African experience.

From the moment we arrived until we left, this was an outstanding experience. The food was quality, the room was like a dream, a glass castle in the first. The safari adventure was the best. Our guide Sam was fabulous, we saw the big five and lots more. I loved every minute staying here. This was an experience I will cherish for ever.

The forest lodge, like the other Phinda lodges is very well run. The staff are very accommodating and friendly. The rooms are beautiful and all all made with glass walls giving you direct views of the sand forest from all angles. We saw nyala's and monkey's practically at the foot of our bed.We spent a lot of time in the restaurant/deck area relaxing and watching the warthogs and other animals in the large veld.We highly recommended lodge for couples and it certainly rises up to that special occasion/celebration. Phinda offers an absolutely first class safari experience.
