The Details

Location

Induli takes its name from the isiXhosa word for hilltop, and the setting earns it. The lodge sits on a rise inside the Amakhala Game Reserve, a 22,000-acre malaria-free conservancy in the Eastern Cape, about an hour from Port Elizabeth up the N2 toward Grahamstown. From the deck you look straight out over the reserve below with nothing in the way.

The bush around the suites is thick with indigenous Milkwood trees and aloes, which is why the outdoor bath feels completely private even though it is open to the view.

Rooms

There are three en-suite chalet suites tucked into the natural bush line, each sleeping two. Rooms come with a king-size or twin bed configuration, air conditioning, a coffee machine, a working space and a bathroom with twin basins, a deep soaking tub and a walk-in shower with a view.

The lodge runs off-grid and pays attention to the small stuff: ethically sourced materials, biodegradable products in the rooms, and single-use plastic kept to a minimum.

Dining

The kitchen leans on regional cooking with locally sourced, seasonal produce, paired with South African wines. Because there are only ever six guests in house, meals feel more like a private dinner than a lodge service.

Activities

Two game drives run every day. The morning drive leaves at first light so you can watch the reserve wake up and read the overnight tracks with your guide. The afternoon drive carries into sundowners and, once the light goes, a chance at nocturnal species like brown hyena, porcupine or lion moving back through the bush.
