How we built this list
Horseback safaris come in two genuinely different formats, and the lodges on this page have built programmes for both. Short guided rides from a base camp suit novice and intermediate riders looking for an extra activity alongside game drives. Multi-day riding safaris (Macatoo, Mashatu, Horizon Horseback and a handful of others) are dedicated horseback expeditions led by professional riding guides for intermediate-and-above riders. The rider experience and age requirements for each format sit on each lodge's page.
Riders self-select harder than almost any other safari activity. Be honest about your ability when you book; your safari specialist will match you to a lodge whose horse string and pace genuinely fits.
