The Details

Location

Bomani lies within a 5,000-acre private concession in the Ngamo Forest Area on the south-eastern edge of Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe's largest reserve. The camp's own private gate puts guests inside the park in around fifteen minutes.

Access is by a one-hour light-aircraft charter from Victoria Falls or Bulawayo, a four-hour road transfer from either town, or a combined road and rail journey aboard the Elephant Express railcar from Dete Railway Station.

Camp

The main lodge is built in traditional safari style, with an open-fronted thatched building and an adjoining teak viewing deck that looks straight onto the camp waterhole. The bar, lounge and dining area share this space, though most meals are served outside. A splash pool set into a raised deck offers a cool break during the heat of the day.

Rooms

Bomani has ten safari tents plus one thatched bungalow, sleeping a maximum of thirty guests. The single Thatched Bungalow has stone walls, a thatched roof and a queen bed. Four Spurwing Tents sit at ground level in front of the lodge waterhole, comprising two twins, one double and one honeymoon tent. Five Saddlebill Tents stand on raised teak decks overlooking the vlei, made up of three twins and two doubles. The Sable Suite, also on a raised deck, has two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a lounge area that can take two extra three-quarter beds, making it well suited to families or friends travelling together. All rooms have ceiling or standing fans, mosquito nets and repellent, electronic safes and air horns.

Dining

Meals are taken in the main lodge or, more often, al fresco on the teak deck overlooking the waterhole. The kitchen serves a daily-changing menu of fresh, generous safari fare, and elephants drinking just metres from the table are a regular feature of dinner.

Activities

Bomani's position on its own concession alongside Hwange means activities run both inside and outside the national park. Days can include morning and afternoon game drives, night drives, time in the look-up viewing hide, pump runs with the anti-poaching team, seasonal canoeing, community visits and the Ngamo Wildlife Sanctuary experience for a chance to see the Big Five. Hwange holds approximately 46,000 elephants and one of the largest populations of sable, cheetah, wild dog and lion in Zimbabwe, and the camp's professional guides serve apprenticeships of between five and ten years.
