The Details
Location
Cottar's 1920s Camp sits in the Olderkesi Conservancy, a private 7,600-acre concession on the south-eastern edge of the Maasai Mara ecosystem in Kenya. The camp has its own private airstrip 15 minutes from the tents, with scheduled flights operated by Governor's Aviation, Safarilink, Airkenya and private charter companies. Keekorok Airstrip is a two-hour drive away.
The conservancy borders the Maasai Mara National Reserve and the Serengeti to the south, putting guests on the migration corridor and inside a wildlife area shared only with one or two other properties.
Accommodation
The camp has eleven cream-canvas tents in three categories. Five luxury double tents (Duma, Swala, Ndovu, Athi and Kudu) work as doubles, twins or triples and combine vintage furnishings with en-suite bathrooms and large verandas. Four family tents each have two en-suite bedrooms, a shared lounge with a wood-burning stove and a generous deck; families staying in these tents receive a dedicated guide, private vehicle and complimentary babysitting. Two honeymoon tents, Kiboko and Molo, are positioned for privacy, with outdoor bathtubs or a wood-fired hot tub, indoor and outdoor showers and expansive private decks.
Dining and Facilities
The hilltop Mess Tent is the social heart of camp, furnished with first-edition books, original explorer equipment and 1920s railway lamps. Meals draw on produce from the camp's organic garden. Other shared spaces include the Explorer's Tent for evening talks and private dining, a pool pavilion with an infinity pool overlooking the plains, a spa tent with two treatment beds, a gym tent and the Dapper Flapper boutique.
Activities
Wildlife drives are the core activity, with open 4x4 vehicles and Cottar's guides, who are routinely named among the best in Africa. Beyond game viewing, guests can join the Maasai Warrior School, wilderness walks and runs with a Maasai warrior, foraging and medicinal walks, coffee tastings, stargazing, kids' entomology safaris and an hour learning alongside the female conservation rangers. Hot-air balloon flights over the Mara, a Mara Elephant Project conservation helicopter flight, raptor experiences with the Kenya Birds of Prey Trust and Maasai village visits are bookable at additional cost.
