The basics
Why, when, and where.
WHY
Etosha National Park is a popular safari destination for everyone who loves wildlife and nature.
As it is renowned for its abundant wildlife, guests have the opportunity to see a wide range of mammals such as Elephant, Lion, Cheetah, Rhino, Giraffe, Zebra and various species of antelope. Etosha is also a birder’s paradise, with over 340 bird species, such as flamingos, ostriches, eagles and vultures.
Visitors can explore the park on a Self-drive safari or book a guided game drive with a knowledgeable guide.
The park’s vast and open landscapes, together with excellent wildlife opportunities, make this a great destination for photographers.
Highlights:
· Wildlife: Big 5, cheetah, herds of zebra, wildebeest and other species, birdlife
· EtoshaPan: a shimmering salt flat, covering 23% of the park’s area, contracting the surrounding grasslands.
· Waterholes: several natural and artificial waterholes attract animals, especially during the dry season.
· Stargazing: the clear and unpolluted skies are perfect for stargazing, including the milky way and numerous constellations.
WHEN
The best time to visit Etosha, depends on what you want to experience:
Dry Season (May – October) is best for game viewing: the bush thins out and water sources become scares, causing animals to gather at the waterholes.
The weather is comfortable during the day, but chilly at night. As this is the high season, more visitors are expected and higher prices – best to book well in advance.
Wet Season (November – April) is best for birdwatching, with migratory birds arriving back in the park.
Lush and green landscapes, contrasting to the arid surroundings. Occasional rain showers, with some roads inaccessible can be expected with fewer tourists and generally lower accommodation prices.
WHERE
Etosha is situated in the Northern part of Namibia, bordering several regions, including Oshana, Oshikoto and Kunene. It is about 4.5 hours drive from the closest international airports of Windhoek and Swakopmund.
