WHY

While Otjiwarongo is not as well known, there are several reasons to visit and explore the area.

Otjiwarongo is considered “the cheetah Capital of the world”, due to several cheetah conservation organisations in this area, giving you the opportunity to learn more about these incredible cats and support their conservation efforts.

The area is known for its diverse wildlife and natural beauty, offering a variety of activities, such as hiking, ostrich farms, cultural experiences and birdwatching.

Due to its central location, Otjiwarongo also makes for the perfect stop-over on your way to the world-renowned Etosha National Park.

Highlights

• Cheetah Conservation

• Waterberg Plateau Park, known for hiking, panoramic views and spot some rare wildlife (eg. Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra)

• Ostrich Farms

WHEN

Much like Namibia as a whole, the best time to visit Otjiwarongo depends on your preferences.

The Dry Season (May – October) is best for wildlife viewing: animals become more active and gather around the waterholes. Comfortable daytime temperatures and cooler nights. This is the high season, so more visitors and higher prices can be expected.

The Wet Season (November – April) are the best season for birdwatching, with migratory birds arriving back, and species are more active.
Lush and green landscapes.  The cheetah conservation centres are open year-round.

WHERE

Otjiwarongo is a 2.5-hour drive North of the capital, Windhoek, and about a 2-hour drive south of Etosha National Park. It thus serves as a central point for travellers to explore the Northern part of Namibia.
