Three ways to build a Cape Town safari

Most visitors treat Cape Town as a destination in its own right, then add a safari. There are three routes our safari specialists recommend.

City break plus a Big Five add-on. Spend four or five nights in Cape Town, then drive under three hours to a malaria-free reserve such as Sanbona or Aquila for two nights of Big Five game drives. Stays from ZAR 2,950 per person sharing.

Cape Town plus a fly-in safari. Pair four nights at the coast with a direct flight to the Sabi Sand or greater Kruger for three or four nights of world-class game viewing. A seven-night itinerary starts from roughly ZAR 55,000 per person.

Cape Town, Winelands and Garden Route self-drive. Take the scenic N2 through Hermanus, Franschhoek and the Overberg, ending at a private reserve on the Garden Route. Ten nights from approximately ZAR 45,000 per person.

Getting there

Cape Town International Airport receives direct flights from Johannesburg (two hours), Durban, and several European and Middle Eastern hubs. Most hotels in the V&A Waterfront and Atlantic Seaboard are 20 to 30 minutes from the terminal. Private transfers and rental cars are easily arranged through our safari specialists.

When to go

Cape Town is a year-round destination. Summer (December to February) brings long beach days and the famous south-easterly "Cape Doctor" wind. Autumn (March to May) is calmer and warm, with spectacular sunsets and quieter attractions. Winter (June to August) brings occasional rain but also whale watching along the coast from Hermanus to False Bay. Spring (September to November) delivers mild temperatures, wildflower blooms on the West Coast, and continued whale sightings.

Where to stay in Cape Town

V&A Waterfront. The harbour precinct suits first-time visitors who want restaurants, shops and Robben Island ferries on the doorstep. Hotels here range from the Victoria & Alfred to the Cape Grace and One&Only.

Atlantic Seaboard. Camps Bay, Bantry Bay and Clifton face the ocean with sunset views of the Twelve Apostles. This is the address for beach glamour, from boutique options such as POD to the landmark Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa.

City Bowl and Gardens. A walkable neighbourhood packed with independent restaurants and galleries. The Mount Nelson and Kensington Place sit here, offering excellent value relative to the Waterfront.

Winelands and beyond. Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Constantia are 30 to 60 minutes from the city centre, ideal for a two-night wine-country extension. Further afield, Bushmans Kloof in the Cederberg offers a wilderness retreat roughly three hours north.
