About the lodge
An overview of Kanana .
Kanana sits on the Xudum River in the southwest Okavango Delta, on a private concession run by Ker & Downey Botswana. Seven tents look onto a chain of palm and ebony islands, with game drives, mokoro trips, motorboat access to one of Southern Africa's largest heronries, walking safaris and a sleep-out deck under the stars.
Highlights
- Private concession with both land and seasonal water activities
- Motorboat access to one of Southern Africa's largest heronries (water-level dependent)
- Night drives, walking safaris and mokoro excursions permitted on the concession
- Sleep Out Deck for a private night under the Delta sky
- Regular sightings of Pel's Fishing Owl and resident lion, leopard and wild dog
- 100% solar-powered, EcoTourism certified, open year-round
You Should Know
Kanana is child-friendly and accommodates families in a dedicated two-bedroom tent with two en-suite bathrooms. Water activities depend on the annual flood cycle, so mokoro and motorboat outings are not guaranteed year-round. Fishing runs March through December and is not offered in January and February. The Sleep Out is available April to November and is easiest to coordinate with a private vehicle.
The Details
Location
The camp sits on the Xudum River in the southwest of the Okavango Delta. The private concession covers a run of islands strung with palms, figs, ebony and knobthorn, and the habitat mix is what makes the area productive for both game and birds. At peak flood, water rises visibly around the raised teak decks of the main camp.
Rooms
Seven safari tents, recently rebuilt and refurnished, are configured as twin or double. Each has an en-suite bathroom with a large walk-in shower. Tents are well spaced along the concession for privacy but stay within easy reach of the main area. A two-bedroom family tent with two separate en-suite bathrooms handles families travelling together. The camp was awarded five-star status by the Botswana Tourism Board.
Dining
Meals are served in the main camp area, with the Sleep Out Deck offering a private alternative: chefs prepare dinner over the fire at the site, then serve a fireside breakfast of jaffles and a light continental spread at sunrise before your morning activity begins directly from the deck.
Activities
Morning and afternoon game drives run in open vehicles, with afternoons often extending into night drives using a spotlight. A window-seat guarantee means every guest gets space and a camera mount. When flood levels allow, guests explore the waterways by mokoro or motorboat. Guided walks with armed guides, fishing for tilapia, African pike and sharp-tooth catfish (March to December, flood permitting), and birding sit alongside the game viewing. Predators are frequently seen, including lion, leopard and wild dog. The concession also holds private access to a seasonal heronry that ranks among the largest in Southern Africa.
Kanana Sleep Out
The Kanana Sleep Out offers a private night under the stars in the Okavango Delta. Guests end their afternoon safari directly at the secluded site, where chefs serve a fresh dinner cooked over an open fire. The deck features a bed wrapped in mosquito netting alongside a private bathroom with a heated shower.
At dawn, you eat a fireside breakfast of jaffles and light continental dishes while watching the sunrise over the floodplains. Your morning activity starts straight from the deck, avoiding any need to return to main camp first. Running from April to November, the overnight stay is easiest to coordinate when paired with a private vehicle.

"Booked an 11-day tour starting and finishing in Johannesburg and including Victoria Falls, Chobe and the Okavango Delta. The service from Cearl was very professional with numerous options discussed before settling on the final version. Prices seemed to be very reasonable."
