The Details

Location

Karangoma sits on the north-eastern arm of the Okavango Delta, virtually at the centre of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Park (KAZA), which overlaps Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe and covers more than 190,000 square miles, an area larger than the state of California and almost the size of France.

The camp's pivotal position between the Okavango's waters and the vast northern woodlands gives it an unusually wide array of habitats, large mammal species and guest activities concentrated in a focused area. Access is by fixed-wing light aircraft from Maun to the Vumbura Airstrip, followed by a low-level helicopter flight of about 20 miles directly into camp.

Accommodation

Eight spacious tents, including one family room, are hidden in a wooded peninsula shaded by leadwood and sausage trees, looking out across a well-trodden game path to a floodplain. Each tent pairs a bedroom and lounge with an adjacent bathroom and both indoor and outdoor showers, and is decorated as a modern take on the textures, colours and patterns of the iconic Hambukushu basketry of the northern Okavango.

Tents are raised on low wooden decks for high-flood years, while the paths between them remain on the ground, weaving through croton and mopane so guests stay connected to the landscape. The lounge and dining areas command expansive views across the floodplain, with a fire pit and plunge pool completing the public spaces.

Dining

Meals are served in the open-sided lounge and dining area overlooking the floodplain, with options to dine around the fire pit or at the Spillway during longer activity days. Rates are fully inclusive of meals and drinks.

Wildlife and Activities

The mainstay is game drives in open 4x4 vehicles, watching elephant, lion and other large mammals from close proximity, both during the day and after dark. Walking safaris follow animal tracks across the sandveld, and guests can take opportunistic cooling dips in the Okavango's channels.

Depending on water levels, motorboats and traditional mekoro carry guests silently through shallower water in search of red lechwe and wetland birds such as the malachite kingfisher. Around 20 miles from camp, the village of Gudigwa is home to a small Bukakhwe San community and offers a cultural visit that shows what it is like to live alongside wildlife in rural Africa.
