The Details
Ruaha is Tanzania's largest national park and one of the wildest places left in East Africa. Jongomero sits in its southern sector, roughly 40 miles from the nearest camp, which means game drives rarely cross another vehicle. Baobabs stand across the hills, and the Jongomero Sand River draws elephant, buffalo and predators to its remaining pools through the dry months.
The camp itself is small by design. Communal areas are open-sided under thatch, with a lounge, bar and dining space that look out over the riverbed. Evenings run to lantern light, a fire pit and dinner served under the stars when weather allows.
Rooms
Eight tented suites are spaced along the riverbank on raised wooden decks. Each has a king or twin configuration, an en-suite bathroom with hot and cold running water, an outdoor shower and a private veranda facing the river. Interiors are canvas and hardwood, kept simple to suit the wild setting.
Dining
Meals are served in the main dining tent, on the deck, or out in the bush. The kitchen turns out a mix of Italian and East African dishes, with fresh bread baked daily. Bush breakfasts after a morning drive and sundowners in the riverbed are part of the standard rhythm.
Activities
Days run to morning and afternoon game drives in open 4x4 vehicles, walking safaris with an armed guide and ranger, and full-day excursions with a picnic lunch for guests wanting to reach farther corners of the concession. Ruaha holds one of the largest elephant populations in East Africa, strong lion prides and a healthy wild dog population.
