The Details
Location
Laluka sits inside the Welgevonden Game Reserve in the Waterberg, a UNESCO-declared biosphere roughly three hours north of Johannesburg. The reserve is malaria-free and covers around 90,000 acres of mountainous, broken bushveld, so drives feel varied rather than flat and open.
The lodge is run as a family business by Giulia, Simon and Didier, and that shapes the tone of a stay. There is no corporate polish; the owners are usually on the property, and the small team knows guests by name within a day.
Accommodation
Rooms are set out as private suites with clear views into the surrounding bush. Interiors are restrained and contemporary rather than heavily themed, with air-conditioning, en-suite bathrooms and private outdoor space. Wifi runs throughout the property.
Dining
The kitchen is built around Laluka Farm, the owners' own organic farm across from the reserve. Vegetables, herbs and fruit are picked the same day, and menus change with what is coming out of the ground. Expect several dining set-ups across a stay rather than the same table every night, and dishes that lean on what the farm has provided rather than a fixed printed menu.
Activities
Twice-daily game drives are led by a dedicated guide in an open vehicle, with lion, rhino, elephant, buffalo, leopard and cheetah all resident in the reserve. Guided nature walks give a slower, on-foot read of the bush.
Guests also visit Laluka Farm to see where the food comes from, and the on-site spa offers treatments built around a calmer, more restorative pace between drives.
