The Details
Location
Last Word Franschhoek sits on Huguenot Road, the village's main street, in a valley ringed by the Drakenstein and Wemmershoek mountains. The Saturday morning market runs directly across the road. Most of the restaurants that give Franschhoek its reputation as South Africa's gourmet capital are within a 600-metre walk, which means guests can leave the car parked for the duration of the stay.
Rooms
There are ten rooms in total. Eight Superior Rooms, split between ground floor and upstairs, average 55 square metres (roughly 590 square feet). Ground-floor rooms open onto a private patio; upstairs rooms are larger and include a separate lounge area. Bathrooms have both a bath and a separate shower.
The two Pool Suites are 75 square metres (around 800 square feet), each with a bedroom, a separate lounge, and a semi-private dipping pool set in a leafy courtyard. Extra beds can be added in the Pool Suites for children at additional cost. Every room has 300-thread-count cotton linen, underfloor heating, air conditioning, a flat-screen TV with Chromecast, an in-room safe, robes and slippers.
Dining
Breakfast is served in the dining room off the pool courtyard, with large windows letting in the valley light. A self-service Resident's Bar is stocked with a solid range of wines and spirits and is open to guests throughout the day. Dinners are taken out in the village: managers Conrad and Franklin can book tables at Protégé, Reuben's, Oku, French Connection, La Petite Colombe or Let's Frite, all a short walk from the front door.
Activities
The Franschhoek Wine Tram is the standard way to work through the surrounding estates, with Haute Cabrière, La Motte and Le Lude among the notable stops. Guests can also walk local trails in the Drakenstein foothills, visit Pigcasso the painting pig at a nearby sanctuary, or spend a morning at the market opposite the hotel. The team can arrange tastings, restaurant bookings and drivers on request.
