The Details

Location

The camp sits in the southern reaches of the Kwando Private Concession in far northern Botswana, a wilderness of roughly 573,300 acres shared with only one other stay, Lagoon Camp. The concession straddles a critical elephant migration route between the Kwando-Chobe river system and the drier interior, with floodplains, leadwood forests and open plains all within easy reach.

Lebala airstrip is about a 20-minute drive from camp, with light-aircraft transfers of roughly 45 minutes from Maun or Kasane. Guests combining Lebala with Lagoon travel by road on a three-hour game-viewing route through the concession.

Accommodation

Nine rooms sit along a shady leadwood island, each on a raised wooden platform with mesh walls that open the tent to the breeze and bush sounds. Eight are standard tented suites and one is a family suite. Every room has a private viewing deck with outside seating and waterhole views, armchairs, a ceiling fan, tea and coffee, a charging station with international multiplugs and a writing desk.

Bathrooms are en-suite with a flushing toilet, double vanity basins, a ball-and-claw bathtub, indoor and outdoor showers and gowns. Hot and cold water is supplied throughout.

Dining

The main area is built on stilts above the fluctuating swamps of the Kwando River, with an open-sided dining, lounge and bar area under thatch and a firepit for evenings. Meals are often taken communally with guides and other guests. A raised viewing deck and hide overlook the marsh and Lebala Channel, and there is a swimming pool, safari shop and complimentary laundry service.

Activities

Every activity is led by Kwando's two-person guide and tracker teams, who work off-road and after dark using a spotlight. The core programme covers off-road tracking, day and night game drives and nature walks. Helicopter safaris can be arranged on request. Lebala is particularly known for high-speed predator drama involving African wild dogs and cheetahs, alongside frequent sightings of elephant, sable antelope, lion, leopard and hyena.

Knows Lebala Camp backwards. Your direct contact from first enquiry to the day you come home.

"Very helpful with itinerary and excellent arrangements of transport from and to Cape Town, and Idubi in Sabi Sands and Lukimbi in Kruger. Although a rep for Safari.com said a letter from a doctor was not required, such a letter IS REQUIRED to go on bush walks if older than 65. Fortunately, we checked the reserve web site and had a doctor's letter."
