The Details

Location

Legendary Lodge sits within the Burka Coffee Estate on the outskirts of Arusha, the launch point for most itineraries into the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara. The estate's mature gardens take the edge off Arusha's busyness, so guests arriving off a long flight or coming out of a packed safari week have somewhere to actually slow down.

The main lodge was once the estate farmhouse, and the renovation has kept that character rather than painting over it. Winding footpaths connect the cottages to the main house, with lawns, old trees and coffee rows on all sides.

Rooms

There are 12 cottages in total: 10 garden cottages and 2 larger family cottages, all with en suite bathrooms. Each has a private verandah, a sitting room with a working fireplace, a king or twin bed configuration, air conditioning, mosquito nets, a deep-soaking bathtub and a rainfall shower.

Standard in-room kit includes a minibar, twin vanity, television, safe, telephone, hairdryer and kettle. Wi-Fi runs through the cottages and main areas. Laundry is available at additional cost.

Dining

Meals are served in a mix of settings rather than a single dining room. Options include the garden veranda, a private dining pergola, and picnic-style lunches set up on the lawns. Rates are on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis, with house wines, local beers, soft drinks, juice and water included at dinner. À la carte lunch is available on request and charged on consumption.

Activities

Activities are deliberately low-key: nature walks and cycling trails through the estate, croquet on the lawns, art-in-the-garden sessions, and guided tours of the neighbouring Burka Coffee Estate from bean to brew. Trips into Arusha take in the Maasai market, the Cultural Heritage Center, and Shanga's glass-blowing and jewellery-making workshops.

Because the lodge sits at the entry point to the northern circuit, day trips by road or light aircraft to Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and Arusha National Park are easily arranged.

Spa

The garden spa offers tailored treatments in a quiet setting among the gardens, or in-cottage for guests who would rather not move. Treatments are charged separately from the room rate.
