The detail

Nestled in the Little Karoo, the 54 000 hectare Sanbona Reserve encompasses a dry, striking landscape and gorgeous views of the 350 million-year-old Warmwaterberg Mountains.

Tilney Manor prides itself on offering exceptional service and private, luxurious 5-star accommodation that offers complete comfort.

Tilney Manor boasts six luxurious Georgian style Suites. Each suite is open-plan and offers an en-suite bathroom with double vanities, a romantic freestanding bath and sheltered outdoor his-and-hers shower, as well as a fireplace, air conditioning, tea & coffee making facilities, minibar, in-room safe, and a private veranda with stunning views of the mountains and plains.

The lodge facilities include a comfortable living area with wood fireplace and satellite tv, indoor and outdoor dining areas, gift boutique, relaxation retreat with steam room and sauna, rim-flow swimming pool, and Wi-Fi access.

The ancient formations of the Cape Fold Mountains form a magnificent backdrop to all the activities on the reserve. Qualified rangers accompany guests on early morning and evening game drives and interpretative nature walks. Cruises on the Bellair Lake in the company of a qualified guide and skipper can be arranged, as can visit San rock art sites dating back more than 1 500 years. The absence of artificial light makes for spectacular stargazing.

Sanbona offers the Big Five and has the only free-roaming self-sustaining white lions in the world. The reserve is home to a variety of large and small antelope, zebra and wildebeest; and small game such as jackal, caracal, aardwolf, and hyena are present in the reserve. It is also home to the critically endangered and highly elusive Riverine Rabbit and the Dwarf Blue butterfly, the second smallest butterfly in the world

Over 200 bird species have been identified in the reserve, which has important raptor nesting sites, including that of the Verreaux's Eagle. African Fish Eagles, breeding pairs of majestic Black Eagles and Black Harrier are regularly sighted. The Bellair Lake provides a wetland habitat for a myriad of water birds, including kingfishers, Black-necked Grebe, and Maccoa Duck.

Tilney Manor is ideal for solo explorers, couples and families looking for a private luxury safari experience.

We just returned from a trip to South Africa and visited the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve (Gondwana Lodge) while there for 2 nights. It was the highlight of the 10 days in the Cape Town area. It is located about 3 hours from Cape Town but well worth the drive! On the afternoon of the first day, we walked into the small lobby and were greater by an incredibly peaceful environment with great smells and hot chocolate! We went on our first game ride that afternoon and Roman, our ranger, was fantastic. He explained the purpose and history of Sanbona and we were able to see cheetahs (mom and cubs), rhinos, gemsbok. The next morning, we left around 8:30 for our next game drive and Roman had wisely suggested that we take a water tour after the morning game ride. On that morning we saw white lions (hidden in the brush so hard to see), giraffe and more! Nearing lunchtime, we got into the boat and saw hippos and then to our surprise we go through the reeds and there is an exquisite lunch set up on a dock in the middle of the water with a white table cloth, wine glasses and a wonderful buffet. We lunched with the team and they explained more about the wildlife. After lunch, Adolph, our water guide, took us through the reeds as elephants had been spotted near the water and we came upon a bull elephant and a female. We were so in awe, we could hardly breathe. Later in the day we saw the water buffalo. That evening, we had an incredible buffet dinner outdoors at the boma with all kinds of delicious foods. Speaking of the foods, the chef, at the Gondwana Lodge is a gem. He could easily cook at any 5 star restaurant and we are picky foodies! He is completely unassuming and learned much of his style by experimentation. We will be writing for some of the recipes if they will share! Our room overlooked the desert and mountains and was so beautiful and peaceful! We did also have a massage at the end of Day 2 and then spent time in the steam room (highly recommended). The next morning, we had our final game drive and again saw the family of cheetahs.Sanbona has an active anti poaching team dedicated to protecting these beautiful animals. The other individual who made the stay perfect was Jerry (Gerry). He saw to all our needs and made sure we had a most memorable time. We highly recommend visiting this wonderful peaceful reserve.

The Sambona reserve is vast area with a vibrant flora and fauna. By the good guides, I've seen in only 2 days 3 of the big 5. The Tilney Lodge has only six rooms, but these are very large (for 2 pers.) and well furnished (incl. Outside shower if you like). Only the alarm time of 6:30 for the morning rides you have to like

This was our third visit to Sanbona - it is now an annual trip for us, and it felt like coming home. We stayed at Tilney Lodge and loved every minute of our experience. The staff and service are impeccable. The meals are well prepared and very generous. We were so lucky with our game viewing, and a massive thanks for this goes to our ranger Dawid. He is knowledgeable and has an excellent sense of humour. There were many laughs on our drives, as well as great experiences with the cheetahs and the elephants. The landscape is so beautiful and dramatic. We were very sad to leave and are already planning for our 2015 visit. Just 10 months to go...

I loved my time at Tilney Manor - the game drives were great fun and the ranger (Alvin) was a wealth of knowledge. Karen and the Tilney Team catered for all your needs and provided a relaxed yet welcoming environment in which to unwind. I cannot wait to return - I highly recommend this Manor (AAA+). Wow what can I say about Sonbona Wildlife Reserve? Excellent location and amazing staff who look after you so well. The rooms are just perfect and very large and comfortable. In all honesty I only went on a game reserve trip because of my partner. After the very first Game Drive I was hooked. Subsequently I went on all four drives over our two day stay. It truly was a quite unique experience and thoroughly enjoyable. We saw lots of fantastic animals at close quarters, herds of elephants, tower of Giraffes, antelopes, white rhino, jackals, zebras and the amazing hippopotamus. We stayed at Tilney lodge which is first class, great food and managed by the wonderful Karen. I also have a new found friend in our Ranger Arwin, one of the most amazing and knowledgeable guys I've ever met. It was a wrench to leave this morning. Totally recommended!

We booked one of the most beautiful trips we've ever had through Safari.com. The service was excellent and uncomplicated. They catered to special requests, booked additional flights, and the accommodation (Simbavati River Lodge) was simply unbelievably beautiful. Our expectations were far exceeded, and we can only recommend Safari.com. We will definitely book our next vacation through Safari.com and recommend it to our friends. Many thanks, Nelia & Catherine!
