The Details

Location

Meno a Kwena sits on tribal land on the western boundary of Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, about two hours by road from Maun. The camp is perched on a rocky clifftop above the Boteti River, the only permanent water source in the area and the reason wildlife gathers here in such numbers through the dry months.

The location is roughly halfway between the Okavango Delta and the drier southern reaches of the Kalahari, which makes it a natural pairing with a wetter delta camp. Day trips head into the Makgadikgadi Pans themselves, where baobabs stand over the crusted salt, or further north to Nxai Pan National Park.

Rooms

Ten classic canvas tents are strung along the clifftop, each with its own view of the river below. The look is colonial-style furniture mixed with locally woven fabrics and simple fittings, brightened by splashes of colour. Every tent has an ensuite bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers.

The layout runs to six twins, two kings and two family units. Both family tents have inter-leading second tents, one with three children's beds and one with two, which makes this a genuinely workable option for families rather than a token gesture. Battery charging is available in rooms and the mess tent, and laundry is included.

Dining

Meals are served in the canvas dining tent or outside, with communal tables that suit the convivial feel of the camp. The lounge is piled with books and old-world artefacts, and a sculpted crocodile nods to the camp's name, which translates as 'teeth of the crocodile'. The rocky swimming pool looks straight down over the river, so lunch and a swim come with the same game viewing as a drive.

Activities

Game drives work the bush and desert country around camp and head into Makgadikgadi Pans National Park for desert-adapted species, including the big-maned Kalahari lion, cheetah, wild dog and desert elephant. Boat cruises run on the Boteti when water levels allow, taking guests along the banks where elephant and zebra come down to drink.

The floating photographic hide is reached by steps from the main camp down to river level. It has comfortable seating, a bar and picnic supplies, and puts guests at eye level with wildlife a few metres away. Bushman walks with the Zu/'hoansi, community visits to Moreamaoto Village, and salt-pan sleep-outs (minimum three-night stay) round out the programme.
