The basics
Why, when, and where.
Visiting Oudtshoorn provides a combination of adventure, relaxation, and cultural enrichment, making it a worthy addition to any South African itinerary.
Why
The "Ostrich Capital of the World" title has definitely made its mark, with a wide variety of attractions incorporating ostrich feathers, eggs and even ostrich riding.
Brought together by the tantalising taste of the Klein Karoo cuisine, and the exciting activities like the Cango Caves, and encounter with wild animals in their natural habitat.
Highlights:
- Adventure Activities: Mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding is the perfect way to explore the region for the intrepid travellers.
- Karoo Culture and History: Experience the local culture by exploring the town's historical buildings and museums.
- Ostrich Farms: "Ostrich Capital of the World," Learn about the fascinating birds, feed them (just watch out for your shiny items) and try an ostrich egg omelette.
When
Oudtshoorn, situated in the semi-arid Klein Karoo region of South Africa, has a climate characterized by hot summers and mild winters.
Although Oudtshoorn is a year-round destination, your best bet for pleasant weather and outdoor activities would be during the spring (September - November) and autumn (March - May) months. If you prefer cooler temperatures and don't mind chillier evenings, winter can also be a great time to explore the region.
Where
Oudtshoorn is located in the Western Cape province, South Africa. Situated in the Klein Karoo between the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountains. It's roughly 420 km (260 miles) east of Cape Town and about 55 km (35 miles) from the coastal town of George.
For most travelers, flying into George and then driving or taking a shuttle to Oudtshoorn is the most convenient option. However, driving from Cape Town or along the Garden Route allows for a more scenic journey and the opportunity to explore other attractions along the way.
