The Details
Sable Alley sits inside Khwai Private Reserve, a 200,000-hectare block on the north-eastern edge of the Okavango Delta, wedged against Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park. The reserve is roughly three times the size of the Sabi Sand and carries a fraction of the vehicles, which is what gives the game viewing here its unhurried feel.
The camp itself faces a lily-covered lagoon that draws hippo, elephant and buffalo through the day. The country around it shifts quickly from mopane clusters to riverine forest, acacia woodland and seasonal channels leading off the Khwai River, which is why a single morning drive can turn up more than 50 species. Access is by light aircraft from Maun to the reserve's own airstrip.
Accommodation
Twelve canvas-walled suites are spread along the lagoon: nine twins, one honeymoon and two family tents. Each runs to 55 square metres, with a double bed, mini indoor seating area, writing desk and screen doors that slide open onto a veranda facing the water. Bathrooms have twin basins, an indoor shower, a flush loo and an outdoor shower for washing off the day.
Dining
Meals move between the indoor dining area and the open deck, where dinner is served under the stars with hippo grunting from the lagoon below. The bar, fire pit and lounge are all built around the same view, and the swimming pool and sun deck sit where you can watch the hippo pods surface through the afternoon.
Activities
Days are split between land and water. Game drives run morning and afternoon, with night drives on offer, and guests can head out on foot with a guide, drift through the channels on a mokoro or take the double-level game-viewing boat further into the Delta. Pre-dawn predator patrols with KPR rangers give guests a working look at how the reserve tracks its lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog. Fishing, birding (over 350 species), helicopter flights and visits to Khwai Village round out the options.

She would check us in for our internal flights and send through the boarding passes, confirm transfers the day before each pick-up, and make sure everything was in place before we ever had to think about it. That attention to detail, and the fact that she was always one step ahead, removed so much of the usual travel stress and allowed us simply to enjoy the trip. It was genuinely the trip of a lifetime, put together in an extraordinarily short timeframe, and Jolene deserves enormous credit for making it all happen. We could not recommend her highly enough."
