The Detail
Nestled in the Little Karoo, the 54,000-hectare Sanbona Reserve encompasses a dry, striking landscape and gorgeous views of the 350-million-year-old Warm waterberg Mountains.
Tilney Manor prides itself on offering exceptional service and private, luxurious 5-star accommodation that promises complete comfort.
Tilney Manor boasts six luxurious Georgian-style suites. Each suite is open-plan and includes an en-suite bathroom with double vanities, a romantic freestanding bath, and a sheltered outdoor his-and-hers shower. Additional amenities include a fireplace, air conditioning, tea and coffee-making facilities, minibar, in-room safe, and a private veranda with stunning views of the mountains and plains.
The lodge’s facilities include a comfortable living area with a wood fireplace and satellite TV, indoor and outdoor dining areas, a gift boutique, a relaxation retreat with steam room and sauna, a rim-flow swimming pool, and Wi-Fi access.
The ancient formations of the Cape Fold Mountains form a magnificent backdrop to all the activities on the reserve. Qualified rangers accompany guests on early morning and evening game drives and interpretative nature walks. Cruises on Bellair Lake with a qualified guide and skipper can be arranged, as can visits to San rock art sites dating back more than 1,500 years. The absence of artificial light makes for spectacular stargazing.
Sanbona offers the Big Five and is home to the only free-roaming, self-sustaining white lions in the world. The reserve hosts a variety of large and small antelope, zebra, and wildebeest, as well as smaller animals such as jackals, caracals, aardwolves, and hyenas. It is also home to the critically endangered Riverine Rabbit and the Dwarf Blue butterfly, the second smallest butterfly in the world.
Over 200 bird species have been identified in the reserve. It includes important raptor nesting sites, such as those of the Verreaux's Eagle. African Fish Eagles, breeding pairs of majestic Black Eagles, and the Black Harrier are frequently sighted. Bellair Lake provides a wetland habitat for a myriad of water birds, including kingfishers, Black-necked Grebe, and Maccoa Duck.
Tilney Manor is ideal for solo travelers, couples, and families looking for a private, luxury safari experience.

"Jolene was simply extraordinary. She put together what became an absolutely incredible African trip for us in the space of barely three weeks, and from the outset her responsiveness, knowledge and genuine enthusiasm were exceptional. Nothing was ever too much trouble, responses were almost immediate, and she very quickly understood exactly what we were looking for, our expectations and the way we like to travel. More than simply being an expert at what she does, Jolene genuinely cared about making the trip special for us, and that came through in every aspect of her planning. What particularly impressed us was the flexibility with which she brought everything together. We already had some of our own arrangements in place, including international flights and staying with friends in Cape Town, but Jolene seamlessly incorporated those into the overall itinerary and still organised all the surrounding logistics and transfers. The safari component she designed was outstanding, taking us through Kruger, Victoria Falls, Chobe and the Okavango Delta, before finishing in Cape Town and the Stellenbosch wine region. Every part flowed beautifully and the lodges, experiences and logistics were exceptional. Just as importantly, Jolene stayed in contact throughout the trip at all the key moments, which made travelling so much easier. She would check us in for our internal flights and send through the boarding passes, confirm transfers the day before each pick-up, and make sure everything was in place before we ever had to think about it. That attention to detail, and the fact that she was always one step ahead, removed so much of the usual travel stress and allowed us simply to enjoy the trip. It was genuinely the trip of a lifetime, put together in an extraordinarily short timeframe, and Jolene deserves enormous credit for making it all happen. We could not recommend her highly enough."
