The Details

Location

The camp sits on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater in northern Tanzania, a collapsed caldera roughly 12 miles across and around 2,000 feet deep. The floor holds one of the highest year-round densities of wildlife anywhere on the continent, including a resident population of black rhino.

Rooms

Ten classic safari tents are spaced along the ridge, each with en-suite bathrooms, proper beds and private verandas facing the surrounding forest and grasslands. The style is deliberately old-school tented, with canvas walls, wooden furniture and paraffin lanterns, rather than a hard-walled lodge.

Dining

Meals are served in a central mess tent or outside under the trees, depending on weather. The kitchen turns out three courses at dinner with matched wines, and picnic breakfasts and lunches are packed for guests spending the full day on the crater floor. All non-alcoholic drinks and alcoholic beverages, including premium brands, are included in the rate.

Activities

Game viewing centres on the crater itself, reached by 4x4 down the access road. Guests choose between two shorter drives a day or one longer full-day drive with a picnic lunch on the floor. Sightings typically include lion, elephant, buffalo, black rhino, hippo pods at Lake Magadi and huge herds of wildebeest and zebra that stay in the crater year-round.
