The Details
Location
The lodge lies along the Ewaso Nyiro River in the Samburu National Reserve, a semi-arid stretch of northern Kenya where doum palms line the river and elephants come down to drink most afternoons. Samburu is the classic setting for Kenya's northern specials: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, beisa oryx and Somali ostrich, all of which are seldom seen further south.
Transfers run from the Kalama Airstrip, a short drive from the lodge. The reserve is reached by scheduled flight from Nairobi's Wilson Airport.
Accommodation
The lodge has 32 standard rooms, 12 superior rooms and one executive villa. Superiors can be interconnected into two-bedroom units, useful for families or small groups. The executive villa has three bedrooms, private plunge pools, air conditioning and a private dining area.
Dining
Meals are served in the main dining area and can be moved to the boma for traditional bush dinners under the stars. The kitchen caters to most dietary requirements on request. Coffee, tea and filtered water are provided in the rooms.
Activities
Beyond twice-daily game drives, the lodge offers guided walking safaris, birdwatching along the river (Samburu records over 400 species), cultural visits to Samburu villages, and sundowner drinks on the deck overlooking the river. A photographic hide is set up close to a waterhole for close-range wildlife photography.
Spa
The spa uses locally sourced oils and offers a small menu of treatments, with in-room options available.
