The Detail
The Silo is an exclusive five-star hotel towering above the V&A Waterfront, surrounded by the natural wonder of South Africa’s Mother City. This magical hotel is a celebration of art, style, architecture, and design. It is a tribute to timeless glamour and contemporary luxury, offering the highest levels of personalized service synonymous with The Royal Portfolio. The Silo Hotel has been built in the grain elevator portion of the historic grain silo complex, occupying six floors above Zeitz MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Art Africa). Zeitz MOCAA houses Africa’s largest collection of contemporary African art.
The exterior of the building was designed by Thomas Heatherwick, Founder and Principal of the London-based Heatherwick Studio. From the outside, the greatest visible change to the building’s original structure is the addition of the ingenious glass windows inserted into the geometry of the hotel floors. These multi-faceted windows, each housing 56 panels of glass, bulge outward as if gently inflated. By night, the building transforms into a glowing beacon in the Table Bay harbor.
Each of The Silo Hotel’s 28 rooms, including a spectacular one-bedroom penthouse room, has been individually designed and decorated by Liz Biden, owner and founder of The Royal Portfolio. Colorful and eclectic pieces juxtapose the modern, industrial architecture. Liz has always had an eye for the unusual and has a unique gift for creating beautiful spaces that are both stylish and comfortable. Each room features a private balcony and a unique collection of contemporary African art. The views offered by the glittering, pillowed-glass windows are some of the best in the world.
The Silo Hotel showcases over 300 pieces of contemporary African art. The Biden family has carefully curated the collection in collaboration with a number of local art galleries. The Silo Hotel’s Art Concierge offers remarkable tailored art tours, giving guests an opportunity to explore the incredible African art scene and visit the Zeitz MOCAA below.
The experience at and around The Silo Hotel is focused on the art and culture of Cape Town while celebrating its exquisite natural beauty. Cape Town, surrounded by dramatic mountains and sandy beaches, is consistently ranked among the Top 10 cities in the world to visit by publications such as Condé Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure magazine. At the hotel itself, guests can relax at the spa, enjoy afternoon tea, sip champagne at The Willaston Bar, swim in the rooftop pool, dine at The Granary Café, or work off the city’s fine dining in the gym.

"Jolene was simply extraordinary. She put together what became an absolutely incredible African trip for us in the space of barely three weeks, and from the outset her responsiveness, knowledge and genuine enthusiasm were exceptional. Nothing was ever too much trouble, responses were almost immediate, and she very quickly understood exactly what we were looking for, our expectations and the way we like to travel. More than simply being an expert at what she does, Jolene genuinely cared about making the trip special for us, and that came through in every aspect of her planning. What particularly impressed us was the flexibility with which she brought everything together. We already had some of our own arrangements in place, including international flights and staying with friends in Cape Town, but Jolene seamlessly incorporated those into the overall itinerary and still organised all the surrounding logistics and transfers. The safari component she designed was outstanding, taking us through Kruger, Victoria Falls, Chobe and the Okavango Delta, before finishing in Cape Town and the Stellenbosch wine region. Every part flowed beautifully and the lodges, experiences and logistics were exceptional. Just as importantly, Jolene stayed in contact throughout the trip at all the key moments, which made travelling so much easier. She would check us in for our internal flights and send through the boarding passes, confirm transfers the day before each pick-up, and make sure everything was in place before we ever had to think about it. That attention to detail, and the fact that she was always one step ahead, removed so much of the usual travel stress and allowed us simply to enjoy the trip. It was genuinely the trip of a lifetime, put together in an extraordinarily short timeframe, and Jolene deserves enormous credit for making it all happen. We could not recommend her highly enough."
