You Should Know

• Children aged 6 and older are welcome at the lodge
• Children aged 6 to 11 may join game drives at the guide's discretion
• Children aged 16 and older may join guided bush walks

• Babysitting services are not available, though child minding can be arranged on request at additional cost with 24 hours' notice
• The gravel approach road is not suitable for low-clearance vehicles and is not recommended at night

The Details

Location

Toro River Lodge lies within the Greater Makalali Private Game Reserve in Limpopo, set along the Makhutswi River on the western side of the Greater Kruger. The reserve is reached via the R36 from Johannesburg or by a short flight to Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport, with road transfers and private charters to an airstrip inside the reserve available on request.

Rooms

Accommodation is designed to integrate with the surrounding bush, blending modern comforts with the rugged character of the Makalali landscape. Rooms are serviced daily and laundry is available at additional cost. A communal swimming pool and hot Jacuzzi sit beneath a sycamore fig at the Main Lodge, with Wi-Fi throughout.

Dining

Dining at Toro River is built around local flavours and ingredients, served across several settings. Guests can eat in the open-air lapa restaurant, around the main boma fire, on the pool deck or riverside under the trees. Private in-room dining can be arranged, and the kitchen accommodates specific dietary requirements with prior notice.

Activities

Two game drives are included each day, led by knowledgeable field guides and expert trackers in the Big Five reserve. Beyond the Big Five, guests are likely to encounter giraffe, zebra, wild dog and a variety of antelope, with hippo and crocodile resident at the Makhutswi River water hole. Guided safari walks offer a closer perspective of the landscape and are included at no additional cost. Conservation experiences are also available, giving guests a more involved understanding of the work that sustains the reserve.
