The Details
Amboseli Sopa Lodge lies in the rolling savannah between Amboseli National Park and Tsavo West National Park, on 200 acres of privately owned land. The setting places guests within easy reach of Amboseli's swamps and open plains while keeping the lodge itself outside the park boundary, giving the grounds a quieter, more residential feel.
The defining feature is the lodge’s proximity to Mount Kilimanjaro. Africa's highest peak rises directly across the plains to the south, and on clear mornings the snow-capped summit is visible from the cottages, the pool deck and the main lounge. The lodge is roughly a four-hour drive from Nairobi, or a short scheduled flight to Amboseli airstrip, followed by a road transfer.
Accommodation
83 thatched cottages are arranged in clusters across the grounds, each containing two en-suite rooms. Every room has twin or double beds, a private bathroom with a shower, and a veranda facing Kilimanjaro or the gardens. Interconnecting rooms suit families travelling with children, and the layout keeps each cluster well spaced from its neighbours.
Game Drives
Game drives run inside Amboseli National Park, a short transfer from the lodge gate. The park is best known for its large breeding herds of elephant moving between swamps fed by Kilimanjaro's meltwater, and for clear sightings of buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and plains game against the mountain backdrop. Lion, cheetah and spotted hyena are present, and the birdlife around the wetlands is excellent. Guided drives depart in the early morning and late afternoon in open or closed safari vehicles.
Dining
Meals are served buffet-style in the main dining room, with international and Kenyan dishes, a daily roast and themed evenings. Breakfast and lunch can be taken on the terrace overlooking the pool and the mountain. The bar and lounge area, built around a large central fireplace under a high thatched roof, is the social heart of the lodge in the evenings.
