The Definitive Guide to Child Policies in the Kruger Park and Sabi Sands

Child policies across 102 lodges in the Greater Kruger and Sabi Sands, triangulated from 2026 and 2027 supplier rate sheets, the lodges' own websites, and our safari specialists. Where the sources disagree, we say so.

Sabi Sands is also sometimes written Sabi Sand. Same reserve either way.

How this guide was built

Every claim on this page is triangulated from three sources: the 2026 and 2027 supplier rate sheets, the lodges' own websites, and feedback from our safari specialists. We read the rate sheets for 102 properties across the Greater Kruger and Sabi Sands, cross-checked them against each lodge's public rates and accommodation pages, and went back to the specialists who book a property most often when a rule was unclear or two documents disagreed. Where a rate card does not state a minimum age, we say that too. None of this is guessed.

The point: when one of our safari specialists tells a family with a four-year-old which lodges will actually work for them, this is the source material they start from. Where anything is unclear or contradictory, they go straight to their contacts at the lodge to confirm. We thought you should see the foundation underneath that conversation.

The short answer for families with young children

The honest picture is messier than "welcomes children" or "does not". Lodges across the Greater Kruger sit on a spectrum. Some accept young children as guests but bar them from game drives. Some accept them on drives only if the family books a private vehicle. Some accept them on shared drives outright, often subject to a minimum age, a particular suite type, or the lodge manager's discretion on the day. The reserve tables below lay each lodge's position out side by side, so the question for a family with a four-year-old is rarely "can we go here?" but "what does it take to make this lodge work for us?"

28 of the 102 lodges run a dedicated kids' programme and 45 can arrange on-site babysitting, both useful when parents want an adults-only sundowner drive. The single biggest variable in the dataset is whether a lodge will let your family have its own game-drive vehicle: when that is on the table, the under-six rule becomes negotiable at many lodges that would otherwise turn you away.

Lodges with a dedicated kids' programme

The exclusive-use workaround, explained

38 of the 102 lodges in this guide offer a private game-drive vehicle as an optional extra, with published rates ranging from around R5,000 to R28,000 per night and most properties landing between R10,000 and R25,000. At 23 of those lodges, paying for the private vehicle also unlocks the under-age rule, meaning a family with a three- or four-year-old who would normally not be allowed on the lodge's standard shared vehicle can join drives if they hire the vehicle themselves.

This is the answer many high-end families are quietly given on the phone. It does not appear on most lodge websites. The economics are straightforward: a private vehicle adds the cost of a guide and a tracker, plus the opportunity cost of an empty seat. The lodge's safety concern with very young children is real, but it is a safety concern about the shared experience, not the child. A private vehicle solves the operational problem.

A second variant: a number of lodges sell exclusive use of the entire camp (typically four to twelve guests, depending on the property), with their own rules. Several Sabi Sands lodges, including the Sabi Sabi properties (Bush Lodge, Earth Lodge, Little Bush Camp, Selati Camp), only accept under-12s when the whole camp has been booked exclusively. Londolozi's Tree Camp and Private Granite Suites operate on the same basis. Singita Lebombo's Two-Bedroom Suites accept all ages where the standard suites do not.

Is Kruger or Sabi Sands better with kids?

On paper this looks like a Kruger-versus-Sabi-Sand choice. In practice nearly every lodge in this guide is a private operation, so the on-the-ground experience is largely the same and the real decision is lodge-by-lodge, not reserve-by-reserve. Look at minimum age, family-suite availability, and whether a private vehicle is needed.

Reserve by reserve

The headline-grabbing minimum age is usually only half the picture. The same lodge may welcome a four-year-old in one suite type but turn away a fifteen-year-old in another. Each reserve below lists every lodge our specialists work with there. The age cells follow the same pattern: the default rule in bold, with a parenthetical line underneath when a workaround lowers the floor. Min age stay and Min age drives are the standing minimums for accommodation and game drives respectively (a child who cannot stay cannot go on a game drive, so game drives inherit the stay age when the rate card is silent). Exceptions names the mechanism and cost when one exists: villa, exclusive-use buyout, private vehicle. Child rate is the child's share of the adult rate. Notes captures the less-standard detail: kids' programme name and age range, babysitting cost, family-unit availability, and walking-safari minimum age. Click any lodge for its full page. Rows marked with โ€  have at least one source-document contradiction discussed below the tables.

Other private reserves

Thornybush, Karongwe and Kapama are fenced private reserves close to the Kruger but not part of the open APNR system. The lodges, guiding standard and Big Five game-viewing are comparable; the geographical distinction is mostly relevant if a family is itinerary-stacking between the parks.

Where the source documents contradict each other

A small but meaningful number of rate cards do not agree with themselves. The Sabi Sabi rate card says under-sixes are not permitted unless a Luxury Villa is booked; a separate Sabi Sabi rate document allows children aged three to six on safari with an exclusive vehicle. Umkumbe Safari Lodge moved its minimum age from five (2026) to ten (2027) on the rate cards we have on file. Royal Malewane's child age bands differ between properties within the same portfolio. Singita Boulders publishes a child age band of ten to sixteen years while sister property Singita Ebony, on the same rate sheet, publishes a band of two to sixteen.

For the 67 rows flagged with โ€  in the tables above, the headline figures we show reflect the most recent supplier document on file. Where two same-year documents disagree, we have leaned to the more permissive reading (the lodge will usually honour it on the day). The full list of disagreements is below; when a specialist quotes a family, they will confirm which version of the rule the lodge will actually apply.

All flagged contradictions

&Beyond Ngala Tented Camp
The 2026 and 2027 supplier rate cards publish portfolio-wide child-rate bands starting from age 0, which might suggest infants and young children are accommodated; however, the lodge's own website, official lodge brochure and lodge press materials all state the camp welcomes guests 12 years and older only. The lodge-specific 12+ minimum is the operative rule, the rate-card bands are generic across the supplier's portfolio and do not override the lodge's stated age policy. Families with younger children should book the sister property in the same reserve.
Becks Safari Lodge
The 2026 supplier rate cards state children are not welcome at Becks Safari Lodge, while the 2027 supplier rate card and the lodge's own website both accept children aged 6 and older. Some competitor listings publish a 12+ minimum, which conflicts with the lodge's own current child policy. We follow the lodge website: 6+ welcome to stay, 6+ on game drives. Specialist feedback indicates the on-the-ground policy at Karongwe is stricter than the rate-card text, the discretionary pathway for 4-5 year olds on drives rarely materialises in practice.
Cheetah Plains
A small number of third-party lodge directories publish a 12+ or 13+ minimum age for Cheetah Plains, which contradicts both the current 2026/27 supplier rate card and the lodge's own dedicated children's-policy page, both of which clearly state that children of all ages are welcome. The lodge website is the authoritative source; families should disregard the third-party age restrictions.
Chisomo Safari Camp
The 2026 supplier rate cards and the 2027 supplier terms publish slightly different game-drive thresholds, one set restricts under-6s "unless approved by lodge management," while the newer terms permit 4-5 year olds at management discretion or via private vehicle. Safari.com specialist feedback indicates the on-the-ground policy across the Karongwe reserve is stricter than either rate-card text suggests: under-6s are not reliably accepted on shared drives even with a private vehicle. The supplier documents also disagree on the single-traveller supplement (40% vs 50%), though this is an adult pricing point. Families with under-6 children should confirm drive participation explicitly at the time of booking.
Dulini Leadwood Lodge
The 2026 supplier rate card publishes a minimum stay age of 8 years (with children 8-16 paying 50% sharing), while numerous competitor listings and the lodge's own collection-level marketing pages describe Dulini Leadwood as welcoming children aged 12 and over. The lodge appears to apply the 12+ position in practice for couples/honeymoon-leaning bookings while accepting 8-11-year-olds at management discretion, families with children under 12 should request explicit lodge confirmation at quote stage.
Dulini Moya Lodge
The lodge's own website and the 2026 supplier rate card agree on the 8+ minimum age and the exclusive-use exception for younger children. The lodge FAQ adds that children's participation on game drives and walks is at the field guide's and management's discretion, which is not spelled out in the rate card. A third-party listing indicates a 12+ minimum for bush walks; the supplier documents for Moya do not state a walks minimum, so guide discretion is likely to apply on the day.
Dulini River Lodge
A third-party listing mentions babysitting and under-6 game drives at Dulini, which conflicts with the lodge's own website and the 2026 supplier rate card, both of which set an 8-year minimum and do not advertise babysitting. The lodge's own published policy is treated as authoritative.
Elephant Plains Game Lodge
Numerous competitor listings describe Elephant Plains as welcoming children of all ages, and at least one third-party listing claims a 50% child discount. Both the 2026 supplier rate card and the lodge's own website are clear and consistent: children under 3 are not accommodated, and the child rate for ages 3-11 works out to approximately 25% off the adult sharing rate (not 50%). Families should plan on the lodge's own stated policy.
Hamiltons Tented Camp
The 2026 supplier rate card publishes a paid child rate for ages 8-11 at Hamiltons, while the same document's front matter says children under 12 stay free when sharing, a direct in-document contradiction. The lodge's own website is also internally inconsistent: one page states children under 8 are not permitted, while the Rates page treats 12 as the operative minimum and accommodates 12+ in their own rooms at full adult rates. Numerous competitor listings describe the camp as 12+ only. Exclusive use of the camp unlocks children of all ages and is consistent across sources.
Honeyguide Khoka Moya Camp
The lodge's own website now lists a minimum age of 12 years from 2027, while the 2026 supplier rate cards still describe Khoka Moya as accepting children of all ages. The forward-dated change aligns Khoka Moya with the rest of the Honeyguide portfolio; families with younger children planning a 2027 stay should confirm in writing with the lodge before booking. Specialist feedback confirms the 2027 cut-over is real and not a website typo.
Hoyo Hoyo Safari Lodge
The 2026 supplier rate card contains an internal tension: the suite rate table publishes a child rate band (8-11 years), but the same document's child-policy table lists children under 12 as not permitted. The lodge's own website resolves this, the published child rate band applies only when the property is booked on an exclusive-use basis, where children of all ages are welcome; under any standard (non-buyout) booking, under-12s are not accepted.
Imbali Safari Lodge
The 2026 supplier rate card and the lodge's own website publish different private-vehicle day rates, and the suite occupancy cap differs between sources (one child per suite versus two children per suite). The exclusive-use "all ages welcome" clause in the supplier rate card sits ambiguously between property sections and is not repeated on the Imbali-specific page, so under-8 access on a full buyout should be treated as request-and-confirm rather than guaranteed. A an older listing references a "children over six" welcome age that is contradicted by every other source, the lodge minimum is 8.
Inyati Game Lodge
The lodge's own website and the 2026/2027 supplier rate cards consistently set a 12+ minimum (with an exclusive-use exception), but numerous competitor listings and a legacy an aggregator listing still publish an 8+ minimum and reference a children's programme. The lodge's current policy is 12+; the older 8+ figure circulating on third-party sites is out of date.
Jabulani Safari Lodge
A third-party operator listing states children must be at least 12 to stay in the suites, which contradicts both the lodge's own website and the 2026 supplier rate cards (Superior Suites accept children from age 6). The lodge's own website and the supplier rate cards are aligned and should be treated as authoritative. The 2025/26 lodge terms and the 2026/27 rate card also differ slightly on bush-walk age, the older terms only require under-16s to be accompanied by an adult, while the newer rate card sets a firm 12+ minimum for bush walks under FGASA rules; the newer rate card applies.
Jock Safari Lodge
The supplier rate cards across consecutive contract periods disagree on which children Fitzpatrick's at Jock accepts: the earlier card limits the villa to children 0-5, while the later card extends this to 0-11. The lodge's own website indicates walks are off-limits to under-12s, while the supplier rate sheet phrases this as under-13s.
Kambaku Safari Lodge
The lodge's own website and the 2026 supplier rate card consistently describe Kambaku Safari Lodge as accepting children of all ages, with under-4s requiring a private vehicle for game drives, these align. A long-standing third-party listing summarises the child rate as "half the adult rate" for under-12s; the 2026 rate card actually publishes the child rate at approximately 60% of the adult rate, not 50%. The rate card uses a 2-12 child band for the safari lodge, while a separate section of the same supplier document uses a 2-10 band for the supplier's unrelated B&B property, only the 2-12 band applies here.
Kapama Buffalo Camp
The supplier rate sheets are inconsistent on whether the under-16 minimum can be waived on full buyout, one rate document spells out the exclusive-use carve-out while others state the under-16 rule without exception. The lodge's own website confirms the exclusive-use exception remains in force, so we honour it.
Kapama Karula Lodge
The 2026 supplier rate card and the 2027 supplier rate card disagree on how Karula's Superior Family Villa second bedroom may be configured (the 2026 version permits 2 children under 12 or 1 additional adult; the 2027 version permits 2 children under 12 or 2 additional adults) and on the number of Family Villas at the lodge (2 versus 3). A third-party listing also publishes a "10 years and older" minimum for Karula, which is stricter than the supplier policy and the lodge's own website, both of which welcome children of all ages to stay (with under-6s excluded from shared game drives).
Kapama River Lodge
The 2026 supplier rate cards phrase the policy as "children under 12 are welcome at River Lodge", which can read as a ceiling on the child concession rather than a confirmation that all ages are accepted. The lodge's own website is unambiguous that children of all ages are welcome at River Lodge for accommodation, with the under-6 restriction applying only to shared game drives. There is also a meaningful 2026 โ†’ 2027 change in the per-suite child rate grid: from 2027, the Marula and Leadwood Suites carry higher child charges than the Tamboti Superior Suites for the same family configuration.
Kapama Southern Camp
The 2026 supplier rate card phrases the stay policy as "children under 12 years are welcome", whereas the lodge's own website states children of all ages are welcome at Southern Camp. Both reconcile in practice to no minimum stay age (the rate-sheet phrasing is not a cap), but the wording differs. On game drives, the lodge's FAQ states only children 6 and older are permitted on the scheduled drives, while older rate-sheet language references "under 12 at the sole discretion of the manager"; the operative current rule is 6+ on shared drives, with under-6s offered a separate kiddie's safari.
Karongwe Kuname Lodge
The 2026 supplier rate cards and the lodge's own current website disagree on the minimum age at Kuname Main Lodge: the older rate-card wording presents the main lodge as adults-only (with the separate Kuname Manor House as the only children-friendly accommodation), while the lodge's website and current terms set the minimum at 12 years. We treat the 12+ rule as current. Separately, specialist feedback indicates the on-the-ground policy on game drives is stricter than the written rate-card text, the 4-5 year-old "management discretion" clause is rarely granted in practice, and a paid private vehicle does not reliably unlock under-6 access on shared drives. Specialist confirms (May 2026): private vehicle does not reliably waive the under-6 rule at Karongwe; Manor House sole-use is the only consistent workaround.
Karongwe River Lodge
The 2026 supplier rate cards and the 2027 supplier terms & conditions disagree on the game-drive minimum age: the T&Cs (and the lodge's own website) describe a 4-year hard floor with a 4-5 discretionary band and a private-vehicle workaround at extra cost, while the 2026 rate cards state under-6s are not permitted on any game activity unless approved by lodge management or directors and make no mention of a private-vehicle option. Safari.com specialist feedback indicates the on-the-ground policy is stricter than the most permissive rate-card text, under-6s should not be relied on to join drives even with a private vehicle. Specialist confirms (May 2026) that Karongwe reserve enforces 6+ on drives in practice; private vehicle is not a reliable workaround.
Kings Camp
The supplier rate sheets carry an internal inconsistency on minimum age: the standard 2026/2027 rate cards and the lodge's own website state children aged 6 and older are welcome at the Main Lodge, but a separate short-term/last-minute booking channel raises the minimum age to 10 and removes the child discount. Families booking through standard channels should rely on the 6+ rule; last-minute bookings within the short-term window may be quoted under the stricter policy. Worth confirming the booking channel with the specialist before assuming under-10s will be accepted.
Klaserie Drift Misava Safari Camp
Numerous competitor listings and a previous version of this article publish conflicting child policies, one third-party site states children 12+, an older listing says all ages welcome with under-4s free. The 2026 supplier rate card and the lodge's own website both confirm the current policy is children 6 and older. The earlier "all ages" wording reflects a 2022/2023 rate card that has since been superseded.
Kruger Shalati - The Train on the Bridge
A third-party listing states children must be 7+ for game drives unless a private vehicle is booked, while the lodge's own rate sheets and website both state the threshold is 6+. The lodge's own documentation has been used.
Last Word Kitara
A third-party listing publishes a 12+ minimum age, which contradicts the lodge's own website, the supplier rate cards, and most other listings (all of which state 6+). The 6+ figure is the correct standard policy; the higher figure appears to be a stale third-party entry.
Lion Sands Ivory Lodge
The 2026 supplier rate card and the 2025-2027 supplier addendum describe the Fish Eagle Residence as a 3-bedroom residence sleeping a maximum of 8 (6 adults plus 2 children), while an earlier supplier contract for 2024-2026 describes it as a 2-bedroom residence sleeping a maximum of 6 (4 adults plus 2 children). Families planning to book the residence should confirm the current configuration directly. The lodge's own website markets Ivory as family-friendly and suited to multigenerational travel; the 10+ minimum age still applies regardless of which accommodation type is booked. One third-party listing suggests children of all ages are welcome in the Fish Eagle Residence, the supplier rate cards do not support this and the 10+ minimum should be treated as firm.
Lion Sands Narina Lodge
A third-party listing publishes a more permissive 10+ minimum age with a 10-15 at 50% rate band, but the 2026 supplier rate cards and the lodge's own website / FAQ uniformly confirm a strict 16+ minimum. Families should treat 16+ as authoritative.
Lion Sands River Lodge
A third-party lodge listing indicates that the entire-lodge sole-use buyout may permit children under 10, but this exclusive-use exception is not confirmed in the 2026 supplier rate cards reviewed, families wishing to bring under-10s should request written confirmation from the lodge before booking. Separately, the 2026 supplier rate card uses generic child-rate bands referencing ages 0-5 and 6-15 but then overrides them with a lodge-specific 10-years-and-older minimum, so the lower bands are not bookable at this lodge.
Londolozi Pioneer Camp
A third-party listing suggests children as young as 4 may stay at Pioneer Camp, with a private vehicle required for 4-5 year-olds on drives. The 2026 and 2027 supplier rate cards and the lodge's own website both state a 6-year minimum at Pioneer Camp; we treat the 6+ rule as authoritative.
Londolozi Varty Camp
A small number of third-party listings publish a minimum age of 4 at Varty Camp with a private-vehicle workaround for 4-5 year olds. The 2026 supplier rate card and Londolozi's own published material both state a 6+ minimum with no private-vehicle waiver, and we treat 6+ as authoritative.
Lukimbi Safari Lodge
The 2026 supplier rate cards and lodge fact sheet state that a private vehicle must be booked for families with children 8 years and under, while the lodge's own website states the requirement applies to families with children 4 years and younger. The supplier rate cards themselves disagree on the child age band: the standalone Lukimbi rate cards price children 2-12 years, whereas the Lukimbi/Idube 4-night combo product prices children only in the 8-12 band. Until reconciled with the lodge, treat the stricter supplier wording (private vehicle for children 8 and under) as the operational rule.
Makanyi Private Game Lodge
The lodge's own website and the 2026/2027 supplier rate card both state a minimum age of 12 (with exclusive-use buyout as the only path for younger children), but numerous competitor listings and older third-party pages still publish a 14-year minimum. Families should treat 12 as the current, lodge-confirmed policy.
MalaMala Camp
The age threshold for the dining-and-drive restriction is stated slightly differently across the supplier rate sheets, the supplier's terms and conditions, the lodge's own website and several third-party listings, variously phrased as under 4, under 5 or under 6. The lodge's own website and the supplier terms and conditions both use "5 years and younger" as the operative threshold, which is what families should book to.
Monwana Game Lodge
A third-party listing publishes a 12+ minimum for Monwana, which is incorrect, the lodge's own website and the 2026 supplier rate card both confirm a 10+ minimum for Suites and Family Suites, with the Monwana Residence welcoming all ages on exclusive-use.
Motswari Game Lodge
The 2026 supplier rate card and the lodge's own website disagree on the minimum age for bush walks at Motswari Main: the rate card sets it at 12, while the lodge's website states 16. We default to the lodge's published age of 16 as this is what guides enforce on arrival. The supplier documents also contain a generic "child-minding can be arranged" clause that is explicitly cancelled for the reserves (including Motswari) by a separate clause stating no child-minding is offered at any lodge except one Qwabi property.
Nkorho Bush Lodge
The supplier rate cards do not publish a minimum age for the guided bush walk, while numerous competitor listings consistently report a 16-year minimum for bushwalks at this lodge. The 16+ figure has been used in the table as it aligns with industry norms for unfenced walking safaris in Big Five territory; families should confirm with the lodge at time of booking.
Notten's Bush Camp
A third-party listing publishes a minimum age of 8 for Notten's, while the 2026/2027 supplier rate cards and numerous competitor listings state 6+. We are treating 6+ as authoritative on the strength of the supplier rate cards. Separately, one competitor listing publishes the child discount as 30%, while the supplier rate cards state a 50% discount for children aged 12 and under, we are treating 50% as authoritative.
Nthambo Tree Camp
The 2026 supplier rate card and the lodge's own website disagree on the minimum age by one year, the rate card cites 12+, the lodge website states children aged 12 and under are not accepted (i.e. 13+). We follow the lodge's current website wording.
Pafuri Camp
The 2026-2027 supplier rate card permits children under 5 on game drives provided an exclusive-use private vehicle is booked, but several third-party competitor listings still state that under-6s are not permitted on game activities at all. Treating the current supplier rate card as authoritative; families travelling with under-5s should confirm at the time of booking.
Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge
The supplier rate sheets disagree on how very young children are handled at Bush Lodge: one variant publishes a "3 and younger free, 4-7 charged" band and allows 3-6 year-olds on safari when the family pays for exclusive use of a vehicle, while other variants and the 2027/2028 terms simply state under-6s are not permitted unless a Luxury Villa is booked. The lodge's own website also markets a family package under which the first child stays free on 3-night-plus bookings, which is not surfaced on the rate card.
Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge
The 2026 supplier rate cards from the same validity period disagree on the youngest child band, one version treats children 3 and under as free with a 4-7 child band, while another starts the child band at 6 years with no free band. The lodge's own website states children must be 13+ to stay at Earth Lodge under shared-use bookings, while numerous competitor listings state 12+. Supplier terms on whether under-6s can join a safari with a private vehicle are framed as a blanket Sabi Sabi rule in one document set and as a Bush-Lodge-specific rule in another; for Earth Lodge the only route to having any child on the property is a full exclusive-use buyout.
Sabi Sabi Little Bush Camp
The supplier rate sheets and the lodge's own website differ slightly in framing: the 2026/2027 supplier terms simply state that children "may be allowed" when the camp is booked exclusively, with rates on request, while the lodge's own website is more explicit that, outside an exclusive-use booking, only guests aged 13 and over are accepted. Both align on substance, children under 13 are admitted only on full-camp buyout, but the website's 13+ default is the clearer phrasing.
Sabi Sabi Selati Camp
The 2026 supplier rate cards disagree internally on the children's rate grid: one version publishes a 3-and-under-free band plus a 4-7 band, while two other versions for the same year start the grid at 6-7 years and omit the under-3-free band. The supplier documents also disagree on the under-6 game-drive mechanism, one version permits 3-6 year-olds on safari subject to a paid exclusive vehicle reserve-wide, while another rewrites the clause around Bush Lodge Luxury Villas only and gives no Selati-specific equivalent. Both should be reconciled with the lodge at the time of quoting an exclusive-use Selati booking.
Saseka Tented Camp
The supplier rate cards and the lodge's own website agree on Saseka's headline policy (main camp 12+; Little Saseka all ages with a private vehicle). One source-of-rate variance is worth flagging: the lodge's SA Resident rates page describes the Little Saseka private vehicle as a separately chargeable extra, whereas the international rate cards describe the private vehicle as included in the Little Saseka sole-use rate. Families booking Little Saseka with under-12s should confirm with the lodge whether the private vehicle is bundled or charged separately under their applicable rate.
Serondella Safari Lodge
The lodge's own website and the 2026 supplier rate cards are consistent on child rules. One minor reserve-naming difference exists: the lodge's website locates Serondella in Thornybush Nature Reserve (Greater Kruger), while some supplier paperwork describes the area as Timbavati, these are adjacent reserves within the Greater Kruger and the difference does not affect child policy. Supplier sheets also show a small inconsistency on the exclusive-use guest cap (11 vs 12 guests), which again does not affect child rules.
Shiduli Private Game Lodge
The 2027 supplier terms suggest 4-5 year olds may join game drives at lodge management's discretion or via a private vehicle, but the 2026 supplier rate cards and the lodge's own website state a firm 6+ minimum on all game activity, and explicitly note that a private vehicle does not waive the under-6 rule. Specialist feedback indicates the on-the-ground policy at Karongwe is the stricter 6+ rule, so families with children under 6 should not assume drives access.
Shimungwe Lodge
Several third-party listings give materially different minimum ages for Shimungwe, some state 10+ (with children to be accommodated in a Presidential Suite that does not appear in the 2026 supplier rate card), and others state 12+. The 2026 supplier rate card and the lodge's own brand listing both confirm children of all ages are welcome to stay (on a roll-away bed in the parents' suite), with 6+ on game drives and 16+ on bush walks. Travellers should treat the all-ages stay policy from the supplier rate card as authoritative and confirm at quote stage.
Shumbalala Game Lodge
The 2026 supplier rate card contains an internal contradiction: its lodge-specific Children's Policy section sets a 10+ minimum at Shumbalala, while the same document's broader supplier-wide Game Walk and Children's Policy clause states children of all ages are accepted at applicable lodges. The lodge's own website ecosystem and numerous competitor listings indicate that under-10s are accepted on request when the family books the two-bedroom Presidential Suite, suggesting the on-the-ground policy is more flexible than the trade-default 10+ rule.
Simbambili Game Lodge
Numerous competitor listings publish different minimum ages for Simbambili (some say 16+, some say children only when the lodge is booked exclusively, one major aggregator says no children at all). The lodge's own website and the 2026 supplier rate cards consistently state a minimum age of 12, and that is the policy reflected here.
Simbavati Amani
A third-party agent listing describes Amani as welcoming children of all ages, which contradicts both the 2026 supplier rate card and the lodge's own website. Both primary sources agree: minimum age 8 on standard bookings, with younger children accepted only when the camp is taken on exclusive use.
Simbavati Camp George
The 2026 supplier rate card sets a firm minimum age of 8 years at Camp George, while the lodge's own website markets it as a family-focused property with language suggesting children of all ages are welcome on game drives. We treat the 8+ rate-card rule as the operational position; families with children under 8 should confirm with the lodge directly before booking.
Simbavati Mvubu Cottage
Lodge is currently closed (rebuilding after a 2025 fire). The policy below reflects historical operation; confirm reopening timeline with the lodge before any booking.
Simbavati River Sands
The 2026 supplier rate card states no children under 6 are accepted, while the lodge's own website lists a minimum stay age of 5 years. The lodge's published policy is the more current source and has been used here; the discrepancy is worth confirming at booking, particularly for game-drive participation, where the supplier's consolidated policy still references age 6 as the minimum.
Singita Boulders Lodge
The 2026 supplier rate card publishes a "10-16 years" child band at Singita Boulders, while the same rate card publishes a "2-16 years" child band at the sister Singita Ebony Lodge on the same reserve, confirming Boulders carries a higher minimum age than Ebony for stays in standard suites, with under-10s at Boulders accommodated only via the Family Suite route.
Singita Ebony Lodge
The 2026 supplier rate card defines the child rate band as ages 2-16 at approximately 50% of the adult rate, while the lodge's own website specifies the 50% discount for ages 10-16 and does not separately price 2-9 year-olds, both sources agree children of all ages are welcome. Separately, the rate card lists private vehicle as a paid extra without an age trigger, but the lodge's published family policy and specialist feedback confirm that any party including a child under 10 must use a private vehicle: complimentary when the party is four or more guests, otherwise payable at the daily private-vehicle rate.
Singita Sweni Lodge
Singita Sweni is often listed by competitors as "all ages welcome on shared game drives" because its rate card publishes a 2-16 child rate band and the lodge sits outside Singita's 10+ restricted list. In practice, Safari.com specialists confirm the portfolio-wide rule: any party including a child under 10 must have a private vehicle, which is complimentary for parties of 4+ but a paid extra for parties of 3 or fewer. Families planning around shared-vehicle drives with an under-10 should expect to either book the Pool Suite (which includes a private vehicle) or pay for one separately.
Tanda Tula Safari Camp
The supplier rate sheets are internally inconsistent on the sustainability-levy child age band: most rate cards treat the levy "child" band as 6-11 (with adult rate applying from 12), while one rate card moves the levy adult threshold up to 17 (with child band 6-16). The accommodation child age band (6-16) is consistent across every rate card, so this affects only conservation-levy quoting, not the headline child rate.
Thabamati Luxury Tented Camp
The lodge's own website currently states a minimum age of 12, while the 2026 supplier rate card still lists a 10+ minimum age with a discounted child rate band for 10-11 year olds. We have followed the lodge's current website (12+) as it reflects the on-the-day policy; the older supplier rate is unlikely to be honoured.
Thornybush Game Lodge
The supplier rate sheets disagree on the daily cost of the private game-drive vehicle that unlocks drives for under-6s, and a promotional rate sheet introduces a "no child rates post 30 days" clause and a slightly different child-rate structure to the standard rate sheet. Confirm the current private-vehicle rate and any promotional rate conditions at the time of booking.
Tintswalo Safari Lodge
The lodge's own website summarises the child policy as "all ages welcome", which reflects the rule for the Presidential Suite, the Tintswalo Manor and full Exclusive Use, but not the standard Explorer Suites (9+) or the Grant Suite (9+). The 2026 supplier rate card is the more precise source. Several competitor listings also publish a flat 12+ minimum for the whole lodge, which is stricter than the current supplier rate card and out of date.
Ulusaba Rock Lodge
The supplier rate sheets and the lodge's own website publish different child-supplement amounts depending on document year and whether the figure is quoted as, rack or as a "stays free" marketing saving. The headline policy, all ages welcome at Rock Lodge, infants free sharing with an adult, is consistent across all sources.
Umkumbe Safari Lodge
The 2026 supplier rate card and the lodge's own website both welcome children aged 5 and over, with 5-11 at 50% of the adult rate. The 2027 supplier rate card raises the minimum age to 10. The lodge's own website has not yet reflected the 2027 change, so families booking for the 2027 season should confirm the applicable policy directly with the property before quoting.
Umlani Bush Camp
The 2026 supplier rate card is silent on a minimum stay age but publishes a child rate for under-12s, implying all ages are welcome. Some competitor listings echo this ("children of all ages welcome"), while at least one third-party listing states a 6+ minimum. The lodge's own published documents do not stipulate a walking-safari minimum age, families planning to walk should confirm at booking.
Walker's Plains Camp
The 2026 supplier rate card states only that children 8 and older are welcome, with no mention of an exception. Numerous competitor listings consistently describe an exclusive-use carve-out allowing under-8s when the lodge is booked on a full-buyout basis. We treat the exclusive-use exception as honoured in practice but flag the silence in the official rate card.
Waterbuck Lodge
The supplier rate sheet contains an internal contradiction on babysitting: the portfolio-wide children's policy says a babysitting service is available at additional cost, while the lodge-specific section states the lodge does not offer babysitting. The lodge's own website resolves this in favour of "no babysitting offered". Some third-party listings describe an under-16 age cut-off, but on review this refers to bush walks specifically, not to lodge admission, where children of all ages are welcome.
Xanatseni Private Camp
A third-party listing describes Xanatseni as accepting all ages with only a game-drive restriction for under-3s (waived on exclusive bookings); both the lodge's own website and the 2026 supplier rate cards instead state plainly that children under 3 are not accommodated at all, with no exclusive-use waiver. Treat the lodge website and rate cards as authoritative: the 3+ minimum is firm.

If a contradiction matters to your trip, talk to one of our safari specialists before you book. That is the whole reason we read these documents in the first place.

Three things this guide does not cover at the lodge level

Malaria and very young children

Greater Kruger is a seasonal malaria area, particularly in the wetter months from October to May. Most family travel doctors recommend caution with children under five in any malaria zone, regardless of the lodge's child policy or how comfortable the camp is. If your child is under five and you would prefer to stay malaria-free, the better-known alternatives are Madikwe Game Reserve and the Eastern Cape's private reserves (Shamwari, Kwandwe), and the Waterberg (Welgevonden, Marataba). These offer Big Five game viewing without the malaria question, and our safari specialists can compare both options for you. This guide is intentionally silent on the medical decision, which is yours to make with a doctor who knows your family.

Light aircraft transfers

Most lodges in this guide are reached by scheduled light aircraft, typically operated by Federal Airlines, CemAir, or Airlink. These operators set their own age, weight, and seat rules for children, separate from the lodge's child policy. Children under two usually fly free on a parent's lap on light aircraft, but airlines apply weight limits to the combined passenger plus child; some routes require a child seat for any passenger under a certain age. Confirm transfer rules with the operator (or with us at booking) before you finalise your itinerary, especially if you are travelling with an infant or with three or more children.

Geographic scope

This guide covers the Greater Kruger ecosystem (the Kruger National Park itself plus the open private reserves of Sabi Sands, Timbavati, Klaserie, Manyeleti, and Balule), together with the three adjacent fenced private reserves of Thornybush, Karongwe, and Kapama. Sabi Sands is also sometimes written Sabi Sand; same reserve either way. The article's URL keeps the shorter house spelling for SEO. Reserves outside this footprint (Madikwe, Waterberg, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, plus East Africa) sit outside the scope of this audit and are not in the tables above; ask a specialist if you want similar data for those regions.

Scope and limits

Coverage: 102 lodges across the Greater Kruger and Sabi Sands ecosystems, drawn from supplier rate cards and signed contracts for the 2026 and 2027 seasons. Of those, 70 state an explicit minimum age in the rate card we have on file. The remainder either welcome all ages, leave the policy to the guide's discretion, or do not state a minimum at all. 68 of the 102 have a stated family suite, villa, or inter-leading-room option. 3 are effectively adults-only at sixteen or above.

A note on terminology. We use "rate card" for the per-night pricing document a lodge publishes for a given season, "terms" or "terms and conditions" for the policy document, and "child cost" for what a child pays as a share of the adult rate. Where you see "individual booking" in a note, it refers to a family or couple booking directly rather than as part of a larger group itinerary. Headline rates assume South African rand unless otherwise noted.

A note on freshness. Child policies change. Lodges add a kids' programme, drop a babysitter, shift their minimum age between seasons, or move to a new ownership group that rewrites the rule book. The figures on this page are accurate as of May 2026, sourced from the most recent supplier documents in our possession at that time. We refresh quarterly. If you are reading this much later, ask a specialist to confirm before you book.

Not in this guide: East Africa (Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda) and the rest of Southern Africa beyond the Greater Kruger. We have similar data for those regions and will publish in the same format if there is appetite. Walking-safari minimum ages and specific babysitting / programme rates are recorded per lodge but not all shown in the tables above; if you need those for a specific lodge, our specialists have them.
