About the lodge

An overview of Camp Hwange.

Camp Hwange sits on a private concession in the central part of Hwange National Park, overlooking a productive natural waterhole. Walking safaris led by Zimbabwean professional guides are a defining feature.

The Details

Location

Camp Hwange occupies a private concession in the central part of Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe's largest protected area. The concession sits between rugged mopane woodlands and kopjes to the north and the sandy teak forests to the south-west, with open savannah running through the middle. This habitat mix is the reason game viewing is so diverse, and why limited dry-season water sources here pull in the kind of concentrations Hwange is famous for.

Access is via Shumba airstrip, with road transfers between airstrip and camp included in the rate. Founded in 2010, the camp remains owner-run under Wild Expeditions Africa.

Accommodation

Camp Hwange has eight thatched guest tents tucked under teak trees, each with en-suite bathroom and views down to the waterhole. The rooms are light, airy and traditional in feel, with insulating thatch keeping temperatures down through the hot months. The main area is a spacious lounge and dining space looking across to the waterhole, with a swimming pool and pool deck for cooling off between activities.

Game Drives and Activities

Game drives operate in open 4x4 vehicles across the private concession, with both day and night drives on offer. Lion prides are resident on the open grasslands, large buffalo herds move through the concession with the prides in tow, and elephant numbers build through the dry season. Less common antelope such as sable and roan are regularly seen thanks to the variety of habitats.

Walking safaris are a core part of the Camp Hwange experience and are led exclusively by fully licensed Zimbabwean professional guides, an accreditation earned through years of training and assessment. An experienced tracker accompanies each walk. Logpile hides give a ground-level perspective on elephants at the waterholes, with guests seated on the ground and animals fully aware of their presence.

Dining

Meals are fresh and unfussy, served in the main lounge and dining area or at the campfire. Early-morning coffee and breakfast are taken around the fire before game drives, lunch is light and healthy back at camp, and dinners are relaxed affairs under thatch or stars.

Notable exceptions

Walking safaris are 12+ and remain at the discretion of the camp guide. A two-roomed family suite with independent bathrooms is available, and chalets can add a third bed for children under 14. An older 2025 Hwange Bush Camp rate sheet stated "no children under 8"; the 2026 Wild Expeditions sheets are more recent and authoritative.
