About the lodge

An overview of Sanctuary Chief's Camp.

In the eastern section of the vast Okavango Delta, lies Moremi Game Reserve, a region of startling contrasts - a waterless center of Savannah and dry woodland surrounded by lily-filled waterways, scattered floodplains, lagoons, riverine forest and palm-fringed islands. Chief Island is one of these islands and considered as having the finest game-viewing in Southern Africa.

Highlights

  • Located in Chief's Island, Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana
  • Experiences: Big Five, scenic helicopter flights over the delta, viewing the multitude of water birds and pods of grunting hippos.

The Details

Consistently rated by Condé Nast Traveller as one of the top safari destinations in Botswana, Chief’s Camp offers guests superb service, fine cuisine, luxurious accommodation, and exceptional opportunities to view the Big Five, all in splendid seclusion.

Chief’s Camp provides ten Luxury Pavilions and a Luxury Suite, all nestled in a shady jackalberry and sausage tree woodland.

Luxury Pavilions

The Luxury Pavilions feature four-poster beds draped with mosquito netting, an en-suite bathroom with a bathtub and outdoor shower, a sitting area, air conditioning, overhead fans, a private dining area, and a viewing deck with comfortable seating and a terrace pool.

The Geoffrey Kent Luxury Suite

The Geoffrey Kent Luxury Suite offers complete privacy and supreme comfort for up to six guests. Additional features include a kitchen, indoor lounge, private boma, and secluded deck areas. The suite comes equipped with a private vehicle, guide, chef, waiter, and housekeeper.

Camp Facilities

Facilities at the camp include a bar, library, dining area, swimming pool, spa, and a split-level main deck that boasts expansive views over the winding waterways of the floodplain.

Game Drives and Unique Experiences

Expert guides accompany guests on early morning and late afternoon game drives in the local area, known as the "predator capital" of Africa. During the season, tranquil mokoro trips provide a serene way to view water birds, pods of grunting hippos, and plains wildlife from the water.

Scenic Helicopter Flights

Guests can enjoy scenic helicopter flights over the delta, showcasing spectacular aerial views of areas unreachable by vehicle or boat.

Wildlife and Birdlife

Large numbers of plains game and predators are found throughout the year. Following the recent introduction of rhino to this concession, the area is now home to the Big Five. Predators include several lion prides, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and the rare and endangered wild dog. Large herds of elephant and buffalo frequent the area. Species such as blue wildebeest, steenbok, giraffe, greater kudu, impala, Burchell's zebra, and tsessebe are abundant, as are water-dwelling antelope like sitatunga and red lechwe, thanks to the region’s flood levels.

The area is also home to over 400 species of birds, including the African fish eagle, Bateleur, Crested and Wattled cranes, Black-tailed godwit, Sacred ibis, Green pigeon, and the rare and elusive Pel’s fishing owl.
