The Details

Clifftop sits in the Welgevonden Private Game Reserve, an 89,000-acre malaria-free wilderness in the Waterberg Mountains of Limpopo. The reserve is home to the Big Five along with cheetah, giraffe, zebra and more than 50 mammal species, and over 300 bird species draw birdwatchers to the cliffs above the Sterkstroom River.

The lodge is around 285 km from OR Tambo International and 75 km from Modimolle, making it an accessible bushveld escape from Johannesburg. Guests can self-drive to the reserve's East Gate or arrive by charter at the reserve airstrip. The setting is dramatic, with the main lodge and suites strung along a ridge that drops away to a game-filled valley.

Clifftop is designed as an intimate hideaway for honeymooners, couples and small groups, and the entire property can be booked on an exclusive-use basis for weddings, milestone celebrations or group retreats.

Accommodation

There are just eight suites, each with a private deck, plunge pool and thatched sala overlooking the valley. Suites have both indoor and outdoor showers, a separate bath, air conditioning, mini bar, room safe, hairdryer, direct dial telephone, tea and coffee facilities and electric blankets. Indoor and outdoor lounges open out to the viewing decks, and one suite has an open-plan bathroom layout.

Game Drives

Morning and afternoon safaris are conducted in open vehicles with experienced field guides, exploring Welgevonden's varied terrain in search of lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo, as well as cheetah, giraffe, zebra and the reserve's prolific plains game and bird life.

Dining

Meals showcase local flavours with a global accent and can be taken in the main lodge, on the viewing deck above the Sterkstroom River or in the wine cellar. Private suite-deck dinners, romantic turndown with bubble bath and wine cellar dinners can be arranged in advance, and wine tastings are available on request at additional cost.
