The Details
Location
Jacana Camp sits on a teardrop-shaped island within the private Jao Reserve, part of the wider Okavango Delta in Botswana. Surrounded by papyrus-lined channels, lily lagoons and open floodplains, it is one of the most water-focused camps in the reserve.
The camp is serviced by the Jao airstrip, shared with sister camps Jao, Kwetsani and Pelo. During the flood season, the setting becomes a true water wilderness, with boats often used for access and daily activities.
Accommodation
Jacana offers five en-suite Meru-style tented suites raised on wooden decks with views over the surrounding channels. Four tents are configured with twin beds and one is king-size, with one of the tents set up as a family tent.
Each tent has an en-suite bathroom with double vanities, indoor and outdoor showers, a sitting area, an in-room safe, a fan, mosquito netting and tea and coffee-making facilities. Guest areas include a dining space, bar, lounge, fire deck and a swimming pool, all powered by 100 per cent solar.
Dining
Meals are relaxed and unhurried, built around fresh, seasonal ingredients and served in the main dining area, on the deck or around the fire. Days move from bush brunches under the trees to candlelit dinners beneath the stars, with local-brand beverages included in the rate.
Activities
The daily rhythm at Jacana is water-led. Mokoro excursions glide silently through lily-filled channels for close-up encounters with reed frogs, birds and smaller Delta creatures. Boat trips in 12-seater and 7-seater vessels reach the farther channels for hippo, crocodile and open-water game viewing.
In the drier months, open 4x4 game drives explore the dry fingers of the Delta in search of elephant, zebra, red lechwe, tsessebe and their attendant predators. Guided walks with expert guides focus on tracks, plants and birdlife, while catch-and-release fishing is offered in season. Scenic helicopter flights over the Delta can be arranged as an optional extra.

A Tale of Two Camps: Stay 5, Pay 4 on a Jacana and Tubu Tree combination. "Jolene was simply extraordinary. She put together what became an absolutely incredible African trip for us in the space of barely three weeks, and from the outset her responsiveness, knowledge and genuine enthusiasm were exceptional. Nothing was ever too much trouble, responses were almost immediate, and she very quickly understood exactly what we were looking for, our expectations and the way we like to travel. More than simply being an expert at what she does, Jolene genuinely cared about making the trip special for us, and that came through in every aspect of her planning. What particularly impressed us was the flexibility with which she brought everything together. We already had some of our own arrangements in place, including international flights and staying with friends in Cape Town, but Jolene seamlessly incorporated those into the overall itinerary and still organised all the surrounding logistics and transfers. The safari component she designed was outstanding, taking us through Kruger, Victoria Falls, Chobe and the Okavango Delta, before finishing in Cape Town and the Stellenbosch wine region. Every part flowed beautifully and the lodges, experiences and logistics were exceptional. Just as importantly, Jolene stayed in contact throughout the trip at all the key moments, which made travelling so much easier. She would check us in for our internal flights and send through the boarding passes, confirm transfers the day before each pick-up, and make sure everything was in place before we ever had to think about it. That attention to detail, and the fact that she was always one step ahead, removed so much of the usual travel stress and allowed us simply to enjoy the trip. It was genuinely the trip of a lifetime, put together in an extraordinarily short timeframe, and Jolene deserves enormous credit for making it all happen. We could not recommend her highly enough."
