The Detail

Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve is well known for its scenic beauty and dramatic rock formations that are typical of the Cederberg. It has a rich cultural heritage with hundreds of Bushman/San rock paintings or rock art that date back as far as 6,000 years. It is a unique safari destination in South Africa.

Feel the spirit of the ancient San Bushmen enter your mind, body, and soul. Listen to the peaceful silence and appreciate the unbelievable natural beauty. Kagga Kamma Private Game Reserve is truly an exceptional retreat.

Nestled between dramatic sandstone formations, Kagga Kamma Private Game Reserve offers extraordinary accommodations. The property includes five stunning thatched hut-style round rooms and ten exclusive cave suites that blend harmoniously into the rocks. Alternatively, weather permitting, guests can opt for a one-of-a-kind open-air sleeping space situated on a remote rocky outcrop. What a special and luxurious way to fall asleep under the clear night skies, with the stars and a crackling fire replacing bedside lamps. This accommodation is perfect for honeymooners, who can cuddle up in the sumptuous bed and enjoy total privacy. Each cave suite and round room is stunningly decorated and comes with an opulent en-suite bathroom and a cozy private terrace—a wonderful spot to enjoy the breathtaking views.

Guests can enjoy a scrumptious breakfast and lunch in the restaurant. For dinner, feast on traditional South African cuisine served in the boma under phenomenal star-studded skies. Pair your meal with a glass of selected Cape wine, and, afterward, enjoy a nightcap in the warm and inviting bar. Browse the well-stocked on-site curio shop, swim a few laps in the sparkling pool nestled in peaceful gardens surrounded by fascinating rock formations, or surrender to relaxation in the health and beauty spa. Treatments include rejuvenating massages, blissful Fynbos steam treatments, and indulgent facials. Kagga Kamma’s tranquil and unique setting makes it an idyllic choice for a memorable wedding ceremony or as a conference venue. The Bushmen Lodge is state-of-the-art for conferences and offers excellent catering services.

Kagga Kamma is located in the southeastern region of the Cederberg, in the Swartruggens district. This region was home to the Bushmen for centuries. The red-brown weathered sandstone formations seen here are characteristic of the Cederberg. The surrounding vegetation consists of dry mountain fynbos, and the area is largely treeless, offering far-reaching views. A variety of shrubs dominate, including Southern Cone Marigold, Klaaslouwbos, Koringbos, Renosterbos, Sneeubos, Wolwedoring, Taaibos, and Skilpadbessie. Some Protea species, typical of the Cape, can also be found in the higher elevations.

Kagga Kamma is home to a variety of wild animals. Common species include Burchell's Zebra and several species of antelope, such as Eland, Gemsbok, White-Tailed Gnu, Blue Wildebeest, Bontebok, Springbok, Grey Rhebok, Duiker, Klipspringer, and Steenbuck.

The reserve is also a haven for bird enthusiasts. On the open plains, large birds such as Ostriches, Secretary Birds, and Kori Bustards can be spotted. Closer to the lodge, you may find birds like the Cape Robin, Cape Bulbul, Cape Sparrow, and House Sparrow. During the winter and spring months, by open water, birdlife includes Egyptian Geese, Red-Billed Teal, Black Duck, and South African Shelduck. The distinctive sounds of the veld at Kagga Kamma include the calls of the Black Bustard and the Namaqua Sand Grouse, the latter producing its iconic "kelkiewyn" call—an apt reminder to enjoy a sundowner as the day winds down.
