About the lodge

An overview of Governor's Camp.

Experience luxury befitting Kenya’s colonial governors when you stay at Governors’ Camp. Established in 1972 as a place for local leaders, it is still the accommodations’ standards that all others are measured by.

Highlights

  • Great value-for-money camp located in the Masai Mara National Reserve.
  • The tents are all en-suite, entirely canvased, and lowly lit, enhancing the safari feel with basic dark wooden furnishings.
  • There is an abundance of wildlife all year round, but during the months of July to October, the game is particularly heightened as the Great Migration passes through these plains and crosses the infamous Mara River.

You Should Know

  • Children of all ages are welcome at Governor's Camp.

The Detail

Named after the Maasai people who inhabit the area and the Mara River, which flows through this great reserve, the Masai Mara National Reserve is a land of breathtaking vistas over endless game-filled plains. Contiguous with Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, it is known the world over for the awe-inspiring spectacle of the annual Great Migration over the golden savannahs. While the migration is spectacular, the Masai Mara offers a constant and unparalleled flow of wildlife throughout the year.

Governors’ Camp nestles in the forest along the winding banks of the Mara River, its waters teeming with birdlife, hippos, and crocodiles, in the heart of Kenya's Masai Mara National Reserve.

Some of the 37 tents line the riverbank, tucked into the forest to enjoy uninterrupted views over the Mara River. Others have views across the sweeping plains of the Masai Mara. Created in 1972, Governors’ Camp set new standards in luxury for a tented camp. Today, it remains one of Africa’s best.

Everything is under canvas. All tents feature en-suite bathrooms with hot and cold running water and flushing toilets. There is a bar tent with a deck overlooking the Mara River and a dining tent with views over the plains.

Child rates

Child rate applies to children under 16. Infants under 3 stay free. Per-child per-night: US$283 low season. US$454 peak (Jul–Sep & Dec festive). Two adults + one child = per-person-sharing adult rate (2 pax) plus child rate; one adult + child = single adult rate plus child rate.

Notable exceptions

  • Governors' Camp welcomes children of all ages and actively caters to families with very young children — high chairs, cots, special children's meals, early mealtimes and babysitting are all available on request. Specially designed family tents (5–8 depending on source) sleep a family of four, with a fixed double on one side, a twin (convertible to double) on the other, optional third single bed, central living area and wide verandah. From 1 January 2026 family tents will be charged a unit rate. The Mongoose Club (a.k.a. Governors' Cub Club) keeps children entertained with educational activities — animal tracks, ecosystems, birdwatching and tree planting. Sole use of a game drive vehicle for families can be arranged on request, subject to family size and availability (advance enquiry required). Mara Park fees: child rate for under-18s; under-3s pay no park fee. Note the sister property Governors' Il Moran Camp does NOT accept children under 8 (special requests considered at booking) — this restriction does not apply to Governors' Camp itself.
