The Detail
Phinda Private Game Reserve is a rich and diverse park that encompasses 28,555 hectares of protected wildlife land in KwaZulu-Natal. The reserve is positioned between the Mkuze Game Reserve and the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park (a World Heritage Site) and is within easy reach of the Indian Ocean coastline. The landscape is lush with grassy woodlands, and broad, sweeping mountain ranges. It is home to the famous Big Five.
Accommodation at Phinda Rock Lodge comprises six secluded Suites. Each unit incorporates an en-suite bathroom with outdoor showers, a private plunge pool, minibar, private viewing deck, mosquito netting, overhead fans, air conditioning, in-room safe, fireplace, "gym in a basket," and Wi-Fi access. Your every need will be taken care of by a personal butler who will soon know your favorite beverages and dishes.
Phinda Rock Lodge offers an exciting range of safari activities, including morning and evening game drives in open Land Rovers. These drives may even take you into the middle of the bush for a safari breakfast or out to the Mzinene River for a morning boat cruise. All drives are conducted by a team of experienced guides eager to share their knowledge of the area. With the coastline nearby, guests also have the option of snorkeling, scuba diving, and fishing out at sea.
During the day, when temperatures soar, guests can choose to relax around the swimming pool or head out on foot to discover firsthand the area's smaller wondrous creatures and plant life. For a more relaxed experience, bird-watching excursions are arranged, or guests can visit a nearby bird hide to enjoy the area's huge bird population. During evening game drives, you can savor a refreshing drink while watching the most magical sunset.
Additionally, Phinda Rock Lodge offers Zulu village tours, seasonal night turtle drives, black rhino tracking on foot, and participative conservation experiences.

Notable exceptions
- Rock Lodge has no dedicated family unit — andBeyond's Phinda family cottages/suites are at Mountain Lodge, Forest Lodge and Zuka Lodge, not Rock Lodge. Standard game drives accept children 6+, with ages 6–11 at the Lodge Manager's discretion. Children under 6 are not permitted on standard game drives but may join any drive if a Private Vehicle is booked at additional cost — sightings access remains at the guide's discretion based on child and animal behaviour, and greater distances may be kept from certain species for safety. Children 3–5 may also have dedicated children's drives arranged on request. Nature walks remain strictly 12+. Childminders must be booked on the day of arrival at ZAR 200 per child per hour, payable directly to the lodge (up from ZAR 120/hr on the 2026 rate sheet).

A night under the stars
Guests enjoy a leisurely afternoon game drive out to a romantic bush setting where comfortable beds with full duvets and warm blankets, mosquito nets, chairs around a blazing campfire and twinkling lanterns await. A ranger prepares a meal on the fire, guests toast the sunset with sundowner drinks, and then sleep under an open starry sky with an armed guard patrolling throughout the night. This is a supplement to existing lodge accommodation and cannot be pre-booked.

Zulu Village Visit
Guests visit a Zulu community just outside Phinda Private Game Reserve, escorted by a local &Beyond guide who shares insights into Zulu culture, customs, beliefs and traditions. The experience includes a visit to a traditional Zulu homestead to observe daily routines, a meeting with the local sangoma (traditional healer/witch doctor) who explains ancestral significance and spiritual beliefs, and ends at the Mbhedula Craft Market — showcasing work from 43 Zulu crafters — with proceeds supporting the Star-in-Training internship programme for neighbouring community members.
