The detail

The prestigious Shamwari Private Game Reserve covers 20 000 hectares of verdant bush along the Bushmans River in the Eastern Cape. The malaria-free reserve is home to five of the seven habitats found in South Africa, and its location close to the Garden Route, making a safari at Shamwari a perfect choice for those seeking to combine a tour of the Garden Route with a luxury Big Five safari.

The award-winning and exclusive Eagles Crag Lodge is positioned in a valley that is surrounded by the African bush. The lodge's design incorporates the use of thatch, stone and glass which blends seemingly with its surroundings.

The lodge boasts nine luxurious Suites which are individually named after different eagle species inhabiting the reserve. These spacious suites open up to bushveld with wall-to-wall glass doors on two sides, offering unrivaled views and lots of natural light. All the suites boast twin or king beds, en-suite bathrooms with both indoor and outdoor showers, air conditioning, overhead fans, hairdryers, minibars, bird spotting scopes, tea and coffee making facilities, international adaptors, and private wooden decks with plunge pools.

The lodge facilities include a lounge featuring a fireplace and big screen television, upstairs lounge with fireplace opening onto a terrace, a relaxation retreat with two therapy rooms, hydro bath, steam room and sauna; gift boutique, library and boardroom, and a business center with Wi-Fi access.

Shamwari is home to a variety of plants, birds, and animals. Guests frequently sight the Big Five during their stay, along with cheetah, caracal, wild dog and a variety of antelope. Evening game drives often reveal the more rarely seen nocturnal creatures, such as the hopping springhare, aardwolf, and brown hyena.

The Shamwari Game Reserve is the perfect place for bird lovers, boasting over 250 bird species. There are a number of raptor species including Black Harriers, Pale Chanting Goshawks, Black-shouldered Kites, Booted Eagles and Secretary Birds. The Bushman’s River meanders through the reserve providing a great refuge for kingfishers, darters, the African Shelduck, finfoots and the iconic African Fish Eagle.
