Child Policy
Machangulo Beach Lodge welcomes families. Parents should note that Mozambique is a malaria-risk area, although risk is relatively low on this part of the coast, and a consultation with a healthcare provider before travel is recommended.
The Details
Location
The lodge sits on the Machangulo Peninsula, a remote stretch of dune forest and white sand just across the bay from Maputo. Guests reach it by boat, leaving the city behind for one of the most untouched corners of southern Mozambique. The setting is defined by warm Indian Ocean water, palm forest and miles of empty beach.
Built in 2009 and 2010 using local materials and labour, the lodge was planned to fit within the dune forest without disturbing the surrounding environment. Sustainability and community sit at the heart of the operation, and all staff are Mozambican.
Accommodation
There are ten rooms, each elegantly understated and designed to sit quietly within the dune forest. Interiors are calm and uncluttered, with modern amenities, complimentary drinking water replenished daily, bath towels and traditional Mozambican capulana beach towels. Wi-Fi is available throughout for guests who wish to stay connected.
Dining
Meals are prepared by a Mozambican kitchen team led by head chef Levite Nhaca, with menus that lean on local produce and the day's catch from the surrounding waters. Dining is relaxed and unfussy, in keeping with the barefoot character of the lodge.
Activities
Days at Machangulo divide between water and land. On the ocean, guests can swim in the warm Indian Ocean, snorkel reefs, kayak through mangrove channels and head out on world-class deep-sea fishing trips. On land, there are nature hikes through the dune forest, birdwatching and long walks along the peninsula's empty beaches.
