Nxai Pan is located on the western edge of the Nxai Pan National Park which borders with the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans in Botswana. The biggest draw to this area is the famous Baines Baobabs and the migration of thousands of zebra - the second largest animal migration in Southern Africa.
The eco-friendly camp, which faces east over the open grasslands of the pans, boasts nine Thatched Units, including a Family Unit, that are specially designed to provide a constant and comfortable temperature throughout the year. Each suite has an en-suite bathroom with double vanities, both indoor and outdoor showers, a lounge area, fan, in-room safe, writing desk, and a viewing deck that overlooks the vast pan and the waterhole in front of the camp, where elephants are frequent visitors. The Family Unit includes an additional twin-bedded bedroom. Camp facilities include a dining area, bar, lounge area, boma, laundry service, and a swimming pool.
The pans were once part of the super lake that covered much of central Botswana, including Lake Ngami and the Okavango Delta. The landscape is largely covered by grassland and dotted with clusters of umbrella acacia trees and mopane woodland to the north.
During the rains, from November to late March, the landscape transforms to lush green. The pans become adorned with succulent grasses, which attract large herds of antelope. The area is well known for large numbers of springbok. During the rainy season, oryx, elephants, and zebras migrate to the region. Giraffes are also often seen in the area in large herds, with up to 30 in a group. These large herds attract many predators, such as lions, cheetahs, jackals, spotted hyenas, and brown hyenas, as well as sometimes the endangered wild dog and the secretive leopard.
Birdlife during the rainy season is prolific. Many species are different from those seen in the Delta, making this a birder’s paradise.
Activities offered at Nxai Pan include game drives, day trips to the famous Baines’ Baobabs and Khama Khama Pan, stargazing, and nature walks with Bushman trackers. Nxai Pan Camp is ideal for solo explorers, couples, and families looking for a unique safari experience.
