The Detail

The prestigious Shamwari Private Game Reserve spans 20,000 hectares of verdant bush along the Bushmans River in the Eastern Cape. This malaria-free reserve is home to five of the seven habitats found in South Africa. Its location near the Garden Route makes a safari at Shamwari an ideal choice for those wishing to combine a tour of the Garden Route with a luxury Big Five safari.

The award-winning and exclusive Eagles Crag Lodge is set in a valley surrounded by African bush. The lodge's design integrates thatch, stone, and glass, blending seamlessly with its natural surroundings.

The lodge features nine luxurious suites, each named after different eagle species found in the reserve. These spacious suites open up to the bushveld through wall-to-wall glass doors on two sides, offering stunning views and abundant natural light. Each suite features twin or king beds, en-suite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers, air conditioning, overhead fans, hairdryers, minibars, bird-spotting scopes, tea and coffee-making facilities, international adaptors, and private wooden decks with personal plunge pools.

The lodge facilities include a lounge with a fireplace and a big-screen television, an upstairs lounge with a fireplace that opens onto a terrace, a relaxation retreat with two therapy rooms, a hydro bath, steam room, sauna, gift boutique, library, boardroom, and a business center with Wi-Fi access.

Guests can enjoy early morning and evening game drives led by professional guides, as well as guided game walks that provide up-close encounters with the smaller wonders of the African bush. Visits can also be arranged to Shamwari's Born Free Foundation Animal Rescue Centre, Ian Player Rhino Awareness Centre, and the Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.

Shamwari is home to a wide variety of plants, birds, and animals. Guests frequently spot the Big Five during their stay, along with cheetah, caracal, wild dog, and various antelope species. Evening game drives often reveal rarely seen nocturnal creatures, such as the springhare, aardwolf, and brown hyena.

The Shamwari Game Reserve is a paradise for bird enthusiasts, with over 250 bird species. There are numerous raptors, including Black Harriers, Pale Chanting Goshawks, Black-shouldered Kites, Booted Eagles, and Secretary Birds. The Bushman’s River provides habitats for species such as kingfishers, darters, African Shelducks, finfoots, and the iconic African Fish Eagle.

Shamwari Eagles Crag Lodge is ideal for solo explorers, couples, and families seeking a luxurious safari adventure.

"Leigh-Ann was outstanding and very helpful in putting an itinerary together not just for a Safari but including internal flights and accommodation in Cape Town and all along the Garden Route. Would highly recommend using Safari.com for your South Africa trips especially if it is your first trip."
