The Details

Location

Rock Lodge sits on the summit of a koppie deep in the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, surrounded by miles of untamed bushveld on the western edge of the Greater Kruger. Guests traverse more than 13,500 hectares of private reserve, in an area known for some of the densest leopard sightings on the continent.

The lodge forms part of Ulusaba, Sir Richard Branson's South African safari property within the Virgin Limited Edition collection. Its sister property, Safari Lodge, sits at the foot of the koppie on the riverbed below.

Rooms

Accommodation centres on Rock Suites, Makwela Suites and a Makwela Two-Bedroom Suite. Each features vaulted ceilings, expandable floor-to-ceiling glass doors, freestanding bathtubs with bush views and private infinity plunge pools cantilevered above the savanna. Artisanal interiors blend natural textures with earth-rich tones.

The Makwela Suites can interconnect, making them well suited to families or small groups, while the Makwela Two-Bedroom Suite adds an elevated stargazing deck that doubles as a private observatory. Cliff Lodge, within Rock Lodge, can be booked by the suite or taken on an exclusive-use basis.

Dining

Rock Lodge offers a range of indoor and outdoor dining settings, from the main dining areas to a traditional boma under the stars and a breezy deck overlooking the bushveld. An indoor bar and a dedicated wine cellar round out the food and drink experience, with menus shaped around the rhythm of the day.

Activities

Twice-daily game drives leave in the early morning and late afternoon, each lasting around three hours, with a dedicated ranger and tracker shaping the route around guests' interests. Sundowners in the bush are a regular feature of the afternoon drive.

Walking safaris let guests explore on foot with their ranger, tracking smaller creatures and learning about the medicinal use of trees and plants. Back at the lodge, guests can swim in the pool, play tennis or pickleball on the lodge courts, work out in the gym or take in the night sky from the private observatory.

The spa offers double therapy rooms, a sauna, cold plunge and hydrotherapy pools, a Rasul mud ritual, a crystal eco-pool, yoga decks and reflexology walkways. Pride 'n Purpose community visits to Dumphries Village, the Good Work Foundation hub and the Kuhumelela Craft Centre are also available, along with helicopter and road excursions to the Blyde River Canyon, God's Window and the Three Rondavels.
