Reopening in July 2026, andBeyond Phinda Vlei Lodge is an intimate six-suite retreat set between rare sand forest and open wetland in the 73,800-acre Phinda Private Game Reserve, KwaZulu-Natal. Guests track the Big Five across seven distinct ecosystems, follow black rhino on foot and pair safari mornings with afternoons on the Indian Ocean coast.

The Details
Location
Phinda Vlei sits within andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve in northern KwaZulu-Natal, a 73,800-acre wilderness shaped by seven distinct habitats including rare dry sand forest, wetland, mountain, bushveld and woodland. Once a patchwork of farmland, Phinda has been carefully restored over three decades into one of South Africa's most celebrated private reserves.
The lodge itself is held between forest shadow and an open, wildlife-rich wetland. The setting feels quiet and held in, generous in space yet softened by natural textures, with timber screens, a shaded pool sala and clear sightlines onto the vlei where antelope graze and elephant occasionally drift past.
Rooms
Six suites are arranged for privacy along the wetland edge. Interiors lean into woven textures and warm timber, with floor-to-ceiling glass framing the forest and vlei beyond. Each suite has a private plunge pool, an open-air shower and a shaded deck for unhurried mornings.
The intimate scale of the lodge, just six suites in total, means service feels personal and game drives uncrowded.
Dining
Meals are shaped around the rhythm of the day, with bush breakfasts after morning drives, light lunches by the pool sala and dinners served in the main lodge or privately on your deck. The kitchen draws on regional South African produce and pairs each menu with a curated wine list.
Activities
No two days at Phinda are alike. Mornings might bring black rhino tracking on foot, twin-engine game drives in open vehicles or birding through the sand forest. Afternoons can stretch to the Indian Ocean coast for turtle nesting in season, scuba diving or boat cruises on the Mzinene River. Back at the lodge there is time to read, swim and simply watch the wetland.
Game Drives
Game drives are conducted twice daily in open 4x4 vehicles, led by andBeyond's specialist ranger and tracker teams. Phinda's traversing covers the full 73,800-acre reserve and seven ecosystems, with reliable Big Five sightings, cheetah on open grassland, black rhino in the Tamboti thicket and strong predator and plains-game viewing. Walking safaris and off-road tracking are part of the experience, alongside specialist activities such as rhino notching and pangolin conservation.

A dedicated photographic safari at Phinda Private Game Reserve led by expert guides with extensive experience in wildlife, birding and landscape photography. Guides provide advice on shutter speed, lenses, filters, angles and lighting, and combine their understanding of animal behaviour with photography skills to help guests plan every step of their safari. 0–2 years sharing: free of charge (cots subject to availability). 3–5 years sharing: free of charge (triple rooms subject to availability). 6–16 years sharing with 1 or 2 adults: 50% of adult rate. 6–16 years in own room: 1st child full adult rate, 2nd & 3rd child 50% (max 3 children per room, triple-room availability). 17+ considered adults.
Notable exceptions
- Phinda Vlei Lodge child policy was updated on 29 Jan '26 to "12 years and older", overriding the general &Beyond child policy (which otherwise permits children from age 0). The 12+ minimum is specific to Phinda Vlei; other &Beyond properties follow the general policy. No dedicated family cottage/suite/villa exists at Phinda Vlei (triple rooms accommodate 2 adults + 1 child aged 16 or younger). If paying for a private 4x4 vehicle (pre-bookable, subject to availability), children of any age may join game drives, with sighting access at the guide's discretion. A dedicated "Family safari @ Phinda" private-vehicle product is also offered, planned around children's ages and interests. Game drives for 6–11 year olds may otherwise be permitted at the Lodge Manager's discretion. Nature walks are 12+; Big Game Viewing. Tracking Walks are 16+. Childminders must be booked on the day of arrival (ZAR 120/child/hour in 2026; ZAR 200/child/hour in 2027, payable directly to the lodge; service hours subject to confirmation). The 2026 rate sheet notes Phinda Vlei Lodge is closed for refurbishment, reopening 01 July 2026.

A private, full-day guided walking experience at Phinda Private Game Reserve led by a specialist ranger and tracker. A night under the stars
Guests enjoy a leisurely afternoon game drive to a romantic bush setting where comfortable beds with duvets, mosquito nets, and a blazing campfire await. The ranger prepares a meal on the fire, sundowner drinks are served at sunset, and an armed guard patrols the site throughout the night. This is a supplement charged in addition to regular lodge accommodation.

Village visit
Zulu Village Visit
Guests visit a Zulu community just outside Phinda Private Game Reserve, escorted by a local &Beyond guide who shares insights into Zulu culture, customs, beliefs and traditions. The experience includes a visit to a traditional Zulu homestead to witness daily routines and family life, time with the local sangoma (traditional healer and witch doctor), and ends with a stop at the Mbhedula Craft Market where 43 Zulu crafters showcase their work — with proceeds supporting the Star-in-Training internship programme.
